KANSAS CITY CHIEFS SACK LARRY JOHNSON: Running back released the day he was due back from his gay slur suspension. Larry Johnson will never get his chance to become the all-time leading rusher for the Kansas City Chiefs. With just 75 yards left to conquer, the running back was released Monday following years of disruptive behavior that culminated in recent days with a two-week suspension over his use of gay slurs. “We decided it was in the best interests of the Kansas City Chiefs organization to move forward at this time,” said coach Todd Haley, whose final decision to cast him aside was not made until early Monday. “A part of him is excited and a part of him is very regretful,” Johnson’s agent, Peter Schaffer, told The Associated Press. “There’s a lot of feelings going on right now. It’s analogous to breaking up with a girlfriend. Maybe you saw it coming, but it still hurts when it happens.” Behind a poor offensive line this year, Johnson has gained 2.7 yards per carry for the Chiefs (1-7) and appeared not to have the quickness and punishing power that enabled him to rush for more than 1,700 yards in Pro Bowl seasons in 2005 and ’06. Controversy began surrounding Johnson’s tenure in Kansas City on draft day in 2003, when he showed disappointment over being selected by the Chiefs instead of his preferred team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 2008, then-coach Herm Edwards benched him for three straight games for violating team rules and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suspended him a fourth game for violating the league’s player-conduct policy. Johnson was later sentenced to two years’ probation after pleading guilty to two counts of disturbing the peace. One woman accused him of throwing a drink on her and another said he had pushed her head at a Kansas City night spot. Last week, an online fan petition was started asking the Chiefs not to let Johnson become the team’s all-time leading rusher — a record running back Kolby Smith said Johnson had been looking forward to. “He wanted to get the record, I know that,” said Smith, who saw his first action Sunday after undergoing knee surgery last year. “Whenever someone has a chance to break a record, it means a lot to them.”
KAREEM ABDUL-JABBAR HAS LEUKEMIA: NBA veteran was diagnosed last December; says prognosis is encouraging. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has revealed that he is undergoing treatment for chronic myeloid leukemia, a rare form of the disease that was diagnosed last December. The former Los Angeles Lakers center said his doctor didn’t give any guarantees, but informed him: “You have a very good chance to live your life out and not have to make any drastic changes to your lifestyle.” Inspired by the way Lakers teammate Magic Johnson’s HIV disclosure brought awareness to the disease in 1991, Abdul-Jabbar said he wants to do the same for his form of blood cancer, which can be fatal if left untreated. “I’ve never been a person to share my private life. But I can help save lives,” he said at a midtown Manhattan conference room. “It’s incumbent on someone like me to talk about this.” Abdul-Jabbar, 62, said he became concerned last year after feeling odd sensations. He went for tests at his alma mater UCLA. “I was getting hot flashes and sweats on a regular basis,” he said. “That’s not normal, even for my age.” An exam showed his white blood cell count was “sky high” and a doctor quickly diagnosed his condition. At first, all Abdul-Jabbar heard was the word “leukemia.” “I was scared,” he said. “I thought it was all the same. I thought it could mean I have a month to live.” “That was my first question,” he said. “Was I going to make it?”
Abdul-Jabbar drew upon his years of martial arts study to approach the diagnosis like a samurai, to face death without fear. “I had my face on,” he said. Abdul-Jabbar is a special assistant with the Lakers and said he hasn’t had to cut back his level of activity of coaching, change his regimen or adjust his diet. “I’m able to sneak out for Thai food,” he said. “There is hope. This condition can be treated. You can still live a productive, full life,” he said. “I’m living proof I can make it.” The retired athlete says he being counseled by his 28-year-old middle son, Amir, a third-year medical student in San Francisco. “He was a real great source for me, just that I can talk to him about it. Being a doctor, he understood what was happening, and gave me realistic viewpoint on it,” Abdul-Jabbar said in an interview with People.com. “That means a lot to me.”

‘PRECIOUS SETS RECORD,’ MJ FILM AN OVERSEAS HIT: ‘Precious’ on path to indie success; ‘This is It’ crosses $100 mil in foreign box office. Lionsgate’s “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” set a new record for films opening in limited release. The indie movie’s weekend take of $1.8 million from just 18 theaters is the best gross ever for a film opening in fewer than 100 theaters, reports Variety. Last year, by comparison, Focus Features’ “Milk” grossed $268,487 from 34 theaters on its first Friday. The LA Times is reporting that the studio behind “Precious,” Lionsgate and its hybrid strategy — playing “Precious” in both highbrow theaters, and in African American communities — worked extremely well. In LA, for instance, “Precious” played at the Landmark in West L.A. and ArcLight Hollywood, more upscale locations, as well as the Magic Johnson Crenshaw 15, which draw large African American crowds. It also opened this weekend in Atlanta, Chicago and New York. Interestingly the paper said that a small majority of moviegoers were black, and a lopsided 68% were female.
Here’s the part you’ve been waiting for if you live outside LA, NY, Chicago and Atlanta. Lionsgate is planning to build quickly on the positive momentum for “Precious.” On Friday, it will open in Dallas, Houston, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington, as well as expand in the cities where it is currently playing, bringing its total theater count to more than 200. On Nov. 20, it will start playing nationwide. “It was a fantastic start, but this is our launch, and our goal is to keep it in theaters for a long time to come,” said David Spitz, executive vice president of distribution for Lionsgate.

COSBY ARTISTS RESPOND TO RUSSELL SIMMONS: Hip-hop icon wrote open letter critical of the Coz. New York, NY — Two of the three artists featured on Bill Cosby’s new hip hop project, “State of Emergency” have issued statements in response to the open letter Russell Simmons published on his site in which he critiques Cosby and the CD project. Due out November 24th, “State of Emergency” incorporates the work of three rap artists, Supa Nova Slom, Jace the Great, and Hahz, who wrote and performed songs based on Cosby’s ideas as a means to bridge the generational gap and inspire social change. Supa Nova Slom, who in addition to being a hip-hop artist, has been a community activist for many years has spearheaded initiatives such as The Hip Hop Meditation Cyphers, The Unify the Hood, Heal the Hood organization, and “The Wholistic Wellness for the Hip Hop Generation” DVD project.
He had this to say in response to Russell’s commentary: “I hope that people do not get distracted and lost in the critiques of Cosby’s past comments but instead they are able to acknowledge what Cosby is doing RIGHT NOW! Cosby is taking a whole other route by investing in politically charged hip-hop that does not condemn but instead inspires and uplifts during a time when there is next to none of that happening in the music industry. People need to be inspired and empowered again to get involved just as we got involved during the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements. This CD hopefully will inspire not only conversations, but also actions, programs, and raised self-esteem.” Another artist on the project, Jace The Great, emphasized Cosby’s intergenerational approach and the need for solutions saying: “Cosby has actually moved beyond just addressing or blaming the youth. In our town hall he spoke openly to the elder generation about their involvement and accountability. Point blank the problem right now is there is a State of Emergency in our communities and we need to act fast. Cosby knowing the power and importance of hip-hop culture is using it as a means to reach more youth not to condemn them.”

Bill Cosby, The Face Of Intolerance?
There are a lot of great entertainers who do great things. Bill Cosby is one of them. He has always used his voice to right what he thought was wrong. However, I believe that too often Mr. Cosby has wrongly placed the blame.
Bill Cosby is an example of someone from the older generation who has consistently blamed the poets and asked suffering community members to bare the full burden of guilt for the struggles that they endure. It is certainly not that he and the rest of the elders don’t care, because they do. In fact, their intentions are pure and good. All the things they say are actually true. What they don’t understand is that the young people who they criticize did not create their own realities. They did not create the crumbling education system that we school them in. They did not create the drug epidemic and drug wars that have resulted in a dysfunctional family structure. They did not create the health care crisis that does not treat them. They did not create the culture of violence that they fall victim to.
While it is true that each one of us can make a change at any moment, it is equally true that at every minute we are all doing the best we can. If you knew better, you would do better. Therefore, those who care and have resources could/should work to create the kind of support systems that could inspire change. From the preacher who lifts our consciousness and asks us to reach for strength to the politicians and philanthropists who put programs in place to support our growth. When the President brought the Cosby attitude to his NAACP speech a few months ago, I was disappointed. It is nice to tell black people to stand up, but isn’t that really Min. Farrakhan’s job? The President’s job is to tell them to walk to the program that he placed on their corner. It is our job to instill the inspiration that gets a young person to walk into the program and not stand on the corner.
We love Cosby and all the older types who judge and blame the poets or culture for the sadness that the poets point to from their realities. From a place of love, I am letting the older generation know that they must admit that young people are less racist, less sexist, less homophobic, less prejudice than their parents and far less than their grandparents. Mr. Cosby, you know that your generation is carrying a lot more dirt, you are all just smart enough to cover it up. Old people are quicker to destroy the planet, abuse the animals and promote wars and then act like young people are violent. Young people are more compassionate, giving, promote gay rights, animal rights, human rights, protect the environment and want to end the wars. When they point out the contradictions that come up and say it on a record and say it LOUD, you can’t believe it! The culture and the poetry is a mirror of the realities that they expressing. Instead of criticizing, let us recognize the faults of adults, because until that happens you all will continue to turn off young people from your message and further alienate them from your generation.
I love Bill Cosby. Who doesn’t? I love him so much that is why I am writing this blog. But this is not just about Mr. Cosby. I know that tomorrow there will be headlines that read “Russell Simmons attacks Bill Cosby.” But let’s be clear, this is a call-out to all the adults who are judging more and listening less to the beautiful, progressive voices that come from our young people…Bill Cosby just happens be on the front line. This is about two generations reconciling…I guess because of my age, you would say that I am stuck on the other side, but I will always recognize that young people can use support instead of judgment. We need to have the hard conversation and both sides need to listen – if you need an office to do it in, my door is always open.
with great love all things are possible
