Senate’s Reid tells Obama he regrets racial remarks

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid apologized to President Barack Obama on Saturday for comments he made during the 2008 presidential campaign that critics find racially offensive.

A new book about the campaign, “Game Change,” by Time magazine reporter Mark Halperin and New York magazine writer John Heileman, said Reid, in private conservations, described Obama as “light-skinned” and with “no Negro dialect.”

Both Reid and Obama are Democrats.

“I deeply regret using such a poor choice of words. I sincerely apologize for offending any and all Americans, especially African Americans for my improper comments,” Reid said in a statement.

Reid said he has been a proud and enthusiastic supporter of Obama and has throughout his career worked to promote adversity in his home state of Nevada and in the Senate.

Obama issued a statement accepting the apology.

“Harry Reid called me today and apologized for an unfortunate comment reported today. I accepted Harry’s apology without question because I’ve known him for years, I’ve seen the passionate leadership he’s shown on issues of social justice and I know what’s in his heart,” Obama said.

“As far as I am concerned, the book is closed,” he said.

Reid, 70, serving in a powerful role in Washington attempting to advance Obama’s agenda, is facing a difficult re-election battle in Nevada this November.

A new Las Vegas Review-Journal poll reported that more than half of Nevadans are unhappy with Reid.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee was critical of Reid, saying Nevada deserves better and Reid’s fellow Democrats should condemn the remarks.

“For those who hope to one day live in a color-blind nation it appears Harry Reid is more than a few steps behind them,” said a spokesman for the group, Brian Walsh.

Comments in the year 1955

Comments made in the year 1955!
That’s only 54 years ago!

‘I’ll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it’s going to be impossible to buy a week’s groceries for $10.00.

‘Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won’t be long before $1, 000.00 will only buy a used one.

‘If cigarettes keep going up in price, I’m going to quit. 20 cents a pack is ridiculous.

‘Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging 7 cents just to mail a letter

‘If they raise the minimum wage to $1.00, nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store.

‘When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 25 cents a gallon. Guess we’d be better off leaving the car in the garage.

‘I’m afraid to send my kids to the movies any more Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying DAMN in GONE WITH THE WIND, it seems every new movie has either HELL or DAMN in it.

‘I read the other day where some scientist thinks it’s possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century. They even have some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas .

‘Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $50,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn’t surprise me if someday they’ll be making more than the President.

‘I never thought I’d see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now.

‘It’s too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet.

‘It won’t be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work.

‘I’m afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business.

‘Thank goodness I won’t live to see the day when the Government takes half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to government.

‘The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on.

‘There is no sense going on short trips anymore for a weekend, it costs nearly $2.00 a night to stay in a hotel.

‘No one can afford to be sick anymore, at $15.00 a day in the hospital, it’s too rich for my blood.’

‘If they think I’ll pay 30 cents for a hair cut, forget it.’

RIHANNA AND MATT KEMP HEAT UP

So what’s the “official” word on Rihanna and Los Angeles Dodgers star Matt Kemp? A rep for the athlete has gone on record, using the term “fun” to explain their relationship.

“They’ve only had a few opportunities to be together, but those times have been fun,” said Kemp’s agent Dave Stewart, according to People.com.

Rumors about the couple first circulated after they were spotted traveling back from the singer’s New Year’s Eve concert in the United Arab Emirates.

Rihanna was then photographed kissing – and having her buttocks grabbed (see photo) – by the 25-year-old baseball star during a romantic vacation in the Mexican resort of Cabo San Lucas.

ACCUSED HOLOCAUST MUSEUM SHOOTER DIES

James von Brunn, the 89-year-old white supremacist accused of a deadly shooting at Washington’s Holocaust museum, died Wednesday in a prison hospital, the Associated Press reported.

At Butner federal prison in North Carolina, spokeswoman Denise Simmons announced that von Brunn died shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday. The inmate’s lawyer, A.J. Kramer, called the death “a sad end to a tragic situation,” but declined further comment.

The suspect had been awaiting trial for the killing of security guard Stephen T. Johns at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum on June 10. Von Brunn had been wounded by return fire but survived.

Officials at the prison hospital had previously said chronic medical problems had complicated a psychiatric evaluation for the suspect, a white supremacist who prior to the shooting had written racist and anti-Semitic messages on the Internet.

MARIAH CAREY’S DRUNKEN ACCEPTANCE SPEECH

The Internet was flooded yesterday with footage of a tipsy Mariah Carey accepting her Breakthrough Actress award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Tuesday night.
Rewarded for her performance in “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” the diva teetered to the stage in a skin-tight, black-beaded full-length Herve Leger gown and gave a long, rambling speech.

After hesitating for a few seconds, she looked to the ceiling, sighed and said, “Please forgive me, because I’m a little bit, um …” An audience member finished the sentence for her with an obscenity, to which Carey replied, “Yeah!” adding a long, hearty laugh. “Oooooooh, my goodness!” she bellowed.

Flanked by her presenter, “Precious” director Lee Daniels, Mariah continued to ramble on about the first time she read “Push,” meeting author Sapphire, and about meeting one of the night’s other honorees, Academy Award-winner Helen Mirren, whom Daniels said turned down the “Precious” role.

In the midst of praising Daniels’ work, Carey spontaneously burst into applause. “Sorry,” she told Daniels. “Sometimes I get a little …” Carey then stopped cold to snap her fingers, then added “… you know, difficult.” And then she giggled again.

Carey then tried to explain how Daniels directed her to play the part, but couldn’t come up with the words. She motioned to her face and said, “What do you call it?” When Daniels said he told her to remove her makeup, she said, “You could take my makeup off and I don’t look like that (expletive) from the thing,” referring to her “Precious” character. “Oh, God,” Daniels moaned, turning away from Carey.

A full minute before Carey and Daniels finally left the stage, the audience had begun to applaud them off. “I thank you all for all listening to my little spiel,” Carey said, wearily, “and God bless you.”

MORE RUMORS OF TIGER IN NEW YORK

Us Weekly is reporting that Tiger Woods has been staying in New York with his billionaire friend Jim Dolan, the CEO of Cablevision and owner of Madison Square Garden and the New York Knicks.
“Jim reached out to Tiger,” Us Weekly quoted a source as saying — adding that Dolan invited Woods to hide out at his $13.5 million fortress-like waterfront estate on New York’s Long Island a week after his sex scandal broke. “Tiger’s been seeing a shrink who goes to Dolan’s house,” says the source.

An MSG spokesperson denies Tiger is at Dolan’s home, telling Us, “It is categorically false and preposterous on its face.” However, the magazine points out that Dolan – a father of five, who has talked about conquering his drug and alcohol addictions after a rehab stint in 1993 – has a history of helping troubled athletes, including basketball player Vin Baker, who battled alcoholism.

The source adds that Dolan has even opened up his fleet of jets to the golfer, whose own plane ferried Woods’ wife Elin from Switzerland back home to Windermere, Fla., Jan. 1.

“He’s the one keeping him under the radar,” says the source. “Jet-setting everywhere. I know Tiger’s flown on Jim’s jet from Florida probably three times.”

The source adds that Nike, one of the few Tiger sponsors that hasn’t dropped him as a spokesman, let him use their jet for at least one trip.

J.LO WANTED OSCAR NOD FOR ‘EL CANTANTE’

In an interview with Latina magazine, Jennifer Lopez says she felt robbed of an Oscar nomination for her role opposite husband Marc Anthony in the 2006 film “El Cantante.”
The actress blames academy voters for not making the effort to watch her performance as salsa star Hector Lavoe’s wife, Puchi.

“I feel like I had that (Oscar role) in ‘El Cantante,’ but I don’t even think the Academy members saw it. I feel like it’s their responsibility to do that, to see everything that’s out there, everything that could be great,” she says.

Lopez admits she would have loved to have accepted her first Oscar from a hospital bed after just giving birth to her twins, Max and Emme.

She adds, “I had just given birth on the 22nd (February), and the Oscars, I think, were a day or two later. I was sitting there with my twins (and) I couldn’t have been happier, but I was like, ‘How dope would it have been if I would’ve won the Oscar and been here in my hospital bed accepting the award?’ — ‘Thank you so much! I just want to thank the Academy!’”

And she still has her sights on an Oscar: “Things will happen when they’re supposed to happen. I have the utmost faith and no doubt that it will (happen) one day.”

WHITE HOUSE NOT HAPPY WITH PETA

Last year, PETA took issue with the White House when President Obama killed a fly on his wrist. On Tuesday, the animal rights organization jumped on the administration’s hit list for using a photo of the first lady without permission.
An image of Michelle Obama was photoshopped into an anti-fur poster along with other famous no-fur advocates Oprah Winfrey, Tyra Banks and Carrie Underwood under the slogan “Fur-free and fabulous!”

The other three have officially endorsed PETA’s anti-fur campaigns. As the wife of the president, however, Mrs. Obama is unable to do the same.

Even though the first lady’s deputy press secretary, Semonti Mustaphi, said in June that “Mrs. Obama does not wear fur,” her office has contacted PETA to warn that the group is using her image without consent.

PETA president, Ingrid Newkirk, said the organization has no plans to remove the posters. “We haven’t asked the White House to fund or promote the campaign, as they can’t do such things, but the fact is that Michelle Obama has issued a statement indicating that she doesn’t wear fur, and the world should know that in PETA’s eyes, that makes her pretty fabulous.”
