Will New Population Count Complicate Obama bid in 2012?

The 2010 census report coming out Tuesday will include a boatload of good political news for Republicans and grim data for Democrats hoping to re-elect President Barack Obama and rebound from last month’s devastating elections.

The population continues to shift from Democratic-leaning Rust Belt states to Republican-leaning Sun Belt states, a trend the Census Bureau will detail in its once-a-decade report to the president. Political clout shifts, too, because the nation must reapportion the 435 House districts to make them roughly equal in population, based on the latest census figures.

The biggest gainer will be Texas, a GOP-dominated state expected to gain up to four new House seats, for a total of 36. The chief losers – New York and Ohio, each projected by nongovernment analysts to lose two seats – were carried by Obama in 2008 and are typical of states in the Northeast and Midwest that are declining in political influence.

Democrats’ problems don’t end there.

Woman in Duke Lacrosse Controversy Convicted for Child Abuse

In Durham, North Carolina, Crystal Mangum, the woman who authorities said falsely accused three Duke University lacrosse players of rape four years ago, has been found guilty by a North Carolina jury of misdemeanor child abuse and damaging property.

A Durham County jury on Friday convicted Mangum of contributing to child abuse or neglect, injury to personal property, and resisting a public officer stemming from a February confrontation with her live-in boyfriend. Mangum, 32, was sentenced to time already served before she was released on bail earlier this year.

The jury deadlocked 9-3 on a felony arson charge, and Superior Court Judge Abraham Jones declared a mistrial.

Police said Mangum piled her boyfriend’s clothing into a bathtub and set it on fire while her three children and two police officers were inside the apartment.

Sheriffs Investigate Jermaine Jackson’s Theft Claims

As previously reported, Michael’s Jackson’s older brother reported the theft of watches, rings and other jewelry after returning to Southern California from a vacation in mid-September.

Detectives say so far there are no suspects and no clear leads.

Authorities say Jackson and his wife noticed the items were missing on Sept. 18 and realized that one of the doors of their Calabasas home had been left unlocked.

Sarah Palin Disses Michelle Obama on TLC Show

Sarah Palin took a shot at Michelle Obama during Sunday’s episode of her reality TV show, “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” alleging the first lady’s anti-obesity campaign attempts to deprive Americans of dessert.

While searching for s’mores ingredients on a family camping trip, Palin remarked: “Where are the s’mores ingredients? This is in honor of Michelle Obama, who said the other day we should not have dessert.”

Mrs. Obama has been a key proponent of an initiative to improve children’s health by encouraging better diets and sufficient exercise. In May she announced her “Let’s Move” program, which promoted dessert alternatives, among other dietary suggestions.

One in 3 American children is overweight or obese, putting them at higher risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other illnesses. Obesity is even more prevalent among black and Hispanic children. Some public health experts say today’s children are on track to live shorter lives than their parents.

But Palin has maintained that Obama’s effort to combat child obesity — which was recently aided by the passage of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act — is one that seeks to take away “God-given rights to make our own decisions.”

During an appearance on Laura Ingraham’s radio program last month, Palin complained: “Instead of a government thinking that they need to take over and make decisions for us according to some politician or politician’s wife priorities, just leave us alone, get off our back.”

Don’t be Scurred, but Your Apps Are Watching You

Beware! Your smartphone is not always your friend. In fact, as the Wall Street Journal’s headline so aptly puts it, “Your apps are watching you.”

An investigation by the Journal surveyed 101 popular smartphone apps for iPhone and Android models and found that 56 of them secretly transmitted the phone’s Unique Device Identifier (UDID) to other companies.

Forty-seven also gave away the phone’s location. And five transmitted age, gender, and other personal details to outside tracking companies. One of the most popular offenders was the Pandora app, which sent age, gender, location, and phone identifiers to various online advertisers through iPhone and Android phones.

“The great thing about mobile is you can’t clear a UDID like you can a cookie,” said one Internet ad network employee. “That’s how we track everything.”

First the House Now Senate Votes to Repeal DADT

The Senate has voted to repeal the “don’t ask, don’t tell” law, ending the legal ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in the military.

It passed the Senate in a 65-31 vote. Earlier six Republicans joined Democrats in a procedural vote that brought the measure to the floor.

President Obama announced he would sign the repeal of the 1993 law, one of his priorities in the lame-duck congressional session.

The House passed the bill this week 250 to 174.

The repeal allows gays and lesbians to serve in the military without fear of prosecution for their sexual orientation. More than 13,500 people have been dismissed from the military under the law.
