Efforts to legalize marijuana for recreational use are gaining momentum in Washington state and Colorado, despite fierce opposition from the federal government and a decades-long cultural battle over America’s most commonly used illicit drug.
Officials in Washington state on Friday said an initiative to legalize pot has enough signatures to qualify for the ballot in November. In Colorado, officials are likely this week to make a similar determination about an initiative there.
Supporters are prepared to possibly spend millions of dollars ahead of the November ballot, when they hope a strong voter turnout, particularly among youth, for the U.S. presidential election will aid their cause.
“Whether it’s make or break depends on what public opinion does after 2012, but in terms of voter turnout this is the best year to do it,” said Alison Holcomb, director of New Approach Washington, the initiative’s sponsor.
While 16 states, including Washington and Colorado, along with the nation’s capital, now allow marijuana use for medical purposes, cannabis remains an illegal narcotic under U.S. law – and public opinion is sharply divided on the merits of full legalization.
California voters turned back a ballot initiative to legalize marijuana for recreational use in 2010, in part because of concerns about how production and sale of the drug would be regulated.
Undeterred, supporters of the Washington state initiative say it represents the “grown-up” approach to legalization.
Sales would only be allowed to adults 21 and older through marijuana-only stores licensed by the state Liquor Control Board, which would also oversee production and processing of the drug. Laws on drunken driving would be amended to include maximum blood content thresholds for THC, the main psychoactive element in pot plants.
Colorado already has a robust regulatory system for medical marijuana that includes a registry of over 80,000 card-carrying patients and rules governing how physicians and distributors operate. Here, too, legalization advocates are stressing a rational regulatory approach.
“Voters aren’t being asked to imagine as much as they are in other states, they have seen that marijuana can be regulated and it doesn’t result in significant problems,” said Mason Tvert, co-director of the Colorado-based Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol.
Organizers of the Washington effort have collected over $1.1 million in campaign funds, with $250,000 of that coming from Progressive Insurance chairman Peter Lewis, public disclosure records show.
Loren Collingwood, senior researcher for the nonpartisan Washington Poll run by the University of Washington, said the initiative could pass, but that backers must spend between $2 million and $4 million to run a competitive campaign.
A poll done by the university in October found 48 percent of Washington residents support the idea of pot legalization, but that was not tied to any particular initiative.
“If young voters turn out in droves like they did in 2008 or even start to approach those numbers … then I think this will pass, but they very well may not,” Collingwood said.
Pot legalization supporters have argued for decades that prohibition has failed to curb pot use, and that the policy enriches drug cartels, hurts casual users and deprives governments of a potentially lucrative source of tax revenue.
Facebook is set to make its controversial “Timeline” profile layout compulsory – however, a survey reveals only one in twelve users like it
Popular social networking site Facebook is phasing out its old look over the next few weeks and moving all of its 800 million users over to a new profile format known as “Timeline”.
Timeline
The new Timeline feature makes everything a person has ever done on Facebook appear on a single screen that scrolls down year by year right back to when the person was born.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg described Timeline as letting you “tell the whole story of your life on a single page”.
Privacy concerns
However, as Timeline makes all of a user’s photographs and wall posts visible to friends, critics have warned the mandatory change could erode users’ privacy.
There are also concerns that this will instantly make it easier for identity thieves and stalkers to profile individuals.
However, a spokeswoman for the site said the change would not alter existing privacy settings.
Lack of user support
A survey of more than 4,000 Facebook users carried out by security firm Sophos revealed that only eight percent of the users – or one in twelve – actually liked the new Timeline layout.
A further 8% said they would “get used to it” with time.
More than half of the users surveyed were “worried” by the new Timeline feature.
Seven-day review deadline
As the new Timeline feature is being rolled out on a mandatory basis, Facebook will give its users a seven-day period to review their Timeline before it is posted to the Web, though it can be published earlier, too.
During this period, users can hide, delete or edit any of their posts before their entire post history becomes visible in the new Timeline format.
Facebook IPO
The changes come as Facebook is beginning the process of becoming a public company.
Reports suggest the social networking site will raise about $10 billion during its IPO later this year in one of the biggest stock issues seen on Wall Street.
According to analysts, Facebook would be valued at between $75bn and $100bn when it goes public, making it one of the world’s biggest companies by market valuation.
Apartheid is dead, Nelson Mandela is free, and now South Africa houses luxury resorts where they host people of all races including Atlanta’s Housewives (You can call them “Real,” we will not). The only color that seems to matter is green. But, just when we thought that was true, an interracial poster pops up and South Africans begin to show their true colors.
According to the Washington Post, the student division of the Democratic Alliance put the poster together depicting a relationship between a black woman and a white man–who appear to be nude– gazing lovingly in one another’s eyes. Tempers flared amongst politicians and the media is on fire with what has become a controversial poster.
One went as far as to call it an “abomination.” It appears South Africa hasn’t grown up as much as some thought it had. The Provincial Secretary for the Congress of South African Trade Unions, Zet Luzipo said:
“The poster says, ‘Join the DA to have an affair with a white person It entrenches the white supremacy that we fought against during the liberation struggle. We will not be excited with having an affair with a white person; we will not be enticed by that.”
That’s just one of the negative depictions of the campaign. There are positive supporters as well. One took to their Facebook page saying:
Love the DA! This campaign image is exactly what South Africa needs, now all the irrelevant racist “boers” can F off to their tiny irrelevant parties and the rest of us can stand together as one post-apartheid nation where race, religion or sexual preference doesn’t mean anything, we’re all human! Go DA! You have my vote.
Maybe South Africa will join the rest of the world and grow up. The poster just shows two people that are happy with one another.
A 50-something year old white woman arrived at her seat and saw that the passenger next to her was a black man. Visibly furious, she called the air hostess.
“What’s the problem, ma?” the hostess asked her
“Can’t you see?” the lady said – “I was given a seat next to a black man. I can’t seat here next to him. You have to change my seat”
- “Please, calm down, ma” – said the hostess
“Unfortunately, all the seats are occupied, but I’m still going to check if we have any.”
The hostess left and returned some minutes later.
“Madam, as I told you, there isn’t any empty seat in this class- economy class.
But I spoke to the captain and he confirmed that there isn’t any empty seats in the economy class. We only have seats in the first class.”
And before the woman said anything, the hostess continued
“Look, it is unusual for our company to allow a passenger from the economy class change to the first class.
However, given the circumstances, the commandant thinks that it would be a scandal to make a passenger travel sat next to an unpleasant person.”
And turning to the black man, the hostess said:
“Which means, Sir, if you would be so nice to pack your handbag, we have reserved you a seat in the first class…”
And all the passengers nearby, who were shocked to see the scene started applauding, some standing on their feet.”
“LIKE” AND “SHARE” IF YOU ARE AGAINST RACISM.
