Thousands of pounds of pot worth $3.6 million found floating off Calif. coast

Harbor Patrol officers found nearly 8,000 pounds worth of marijuana floating off the coast of Orange County, Calif., on Sunday, according to reports.

The marijuana found south of Los Angeles was packed in around 160 bales and had an estimated street value of $3.6 million, border patrol agents told CBS Los Angeles.

“Shortly before noon on Sunday, May 20, maritime law enforcement authorities received a tip about suspicious bales floating in the water off the coast of Orange County, near Dana Point,” border patrol agent supervisor Michael Jimenez said in a statement.

The haul reportedly totaled 7,263 pounds.

Three Harbor Patrol ships and a Coast Guard cutter were sent to recover the marijuana from the water.

“At other events, they’ve dumped the bales to get rid of weight if they’re being chased,” he said. “Generally in these cases we’re aware they’re being dumped. What’s more unusual is that the bales were floating with no boat in sight.”

No suspects or vessel have been identified in connection to an ongoing investigation, the Register reported.

The incident was out of the ordinary, Jimenez told the Register.

Donna Summer, queen of disco, dies at 63

Summer was one of disco’s biggest stars and also had a huge influence on the synth pop and dance music scenes.

Her family said they were “at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy”.

Stars including Kylie Minogue, Sir Elton John and Mary J Blige have paid tribute.

R&B singer Blige said on Twitter that Summer was “truly a game changer”, while producer Quincy Jones said her voice “was the heartbeat and soundtrack of a decade”.

Minogue described her as “one of my earliest musical inspirations”, while Dionne Warwick said she was sad to lose a great performer and “dear friend”.

Summer, who was reported to have had cancer, had been living in Florida with her husband Bruce Sudano.

A statement from her family said: “Early this morning, we lost Donna Summer Sudano, a woman of many gifts, the greatest being her faith.

“While we grieve her passing, we are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy. Words truly can’t express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time.”

Elton John said Summer was more than the “queen of disco”, adding: “Her records sound as good today as they ever did.

“That she has never been inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame is a total disgrace especially when I see the second-rate talent that has been inducted.”

Duran Duran keyboardist Nick Rhodes said: “It’s extremely rare that you hear one song that completely changes the way you perceive music. I Feel Love achieved that.”

Singer Marc Almond recalled how Summer’s work with Italian synthesiser pioneer Giorgio Moroder had “changed the face of music and changed my life”.

“I Feel Love was a truly original and barrier breaking record, and Now I Need You and Working The Midnight Shift are simply some of the best euphoric electronic tracks ever,” he said.

BBC Radio 2 presenter Paul Gambaccini said I Feel Love was “one of the key records in the history of electronic dance music and will always be recognised as such”.

Summer grew up in Boston and started singing in her church’s gospel choir before starting to perform in stage musicals.

It was her work with the Moroder that led to her pop breakthrough with Love To Love You Baby in 1975 – the first of 29 UK top 40 singles.

Autopsy: Mary Kennedy died of asphyxiation due to hanging

Mary Kennedy, the estranged wife of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., died of asphyxiation due to hanging, the Westchester County, New York, medical examiner said Thursday.

The Bedford Police Department declined to say more because it is still investigating what led to the hanging. Her death is the latest for a family that has seen its share of tragedy.

“We know from a history of this family, it’s very hard being a Kennedy, either being a blood Kennedy or being married to one,” Laurence Leamer, a Kennedy biographer, said on CNN’s “Erin Burnett OutFront.” “The overwhelming celebrity, the attention, the obligations, the expectations that you’re supposed to do something with your life. It’s very, very hard.”

In 1968, Robert F. Kennedy Sr. was assassinated in California while making a run for the White House. His death came more than four years after his brother, President John F. Kennedy, also died at the hands of an assassin.

More than three decades later in 1999, John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and his sister-in-law, Lauren Bessette, died when a plane he was piloting crashed in the waters off Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. David Kennedy died of a drug overdose and Michael Kennedy was killed in a skiing accident.

Bedford police confirmed Wednesday that they were investigating a possible unattended death at an address owned by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The governor proposed his new budget plan that includes more spending Monday and in a YouTube video. Brown proposed an increase in funding for K-12 education provided voters approve his proposal to increase the state’s sales tax on everyone along with hiking income taxes on “the rich.”

Brown has championed tax hikes since he took office in January 2011; Republican legislators blocked his efforts last year. Democrats have controlled the California House and Senate for many years.

Brown would levy a 3 percent tax increase on those earning more than $250,000 which affects about 1% of taxpayers. Analystswarn that tax hikes will put a damper on economic growth and small business owners may need to cut back on employees to cough up more cash for state.

Brown also wants to raise California’s sales tax by a quarter of a point starting in January and lasting through 2016, however most analysts agree that once the state approves a sales tax increase it never goes away.

That would bump up the average state sales tax rate to 8.4%. Brown claims his proposal would bring in $8.5 billion. Brown warned voters that an additional $6 billion would be slashed on January 1, 2013 if they don’t approve his proposal.

California’s current budget took into account a $4 billion increase in state tax revenues that never occurred. The state is $3.5 billion below estimates; the bulk of the shortage was in personal income taxes, according to the controller’s office.

Asked at a press conference whether this week’s Facebook’s IPO would brighten the state’s fiscal outlook, Brown responded: “Who knows? That’s Wall Street.”
