Detroit Loses Staggering 25 Percent of Population in a Decade

Detroit can’t catch a break. The only time the city has been shown any love lately is when Chrysler showed the worldits empowering take on the city during the Super Bowl leaving an indelible catch phrase on everyone’s minds to remember: “This is the Motor City and this is what we do.” But, unfortunately, those words have taken on a new meaning and what they’re “doing” is leaving.

The city affectionately known as The D, is now using that acronym for “Departing.” The New York Times depicts a dismal side to the Motor City when they reported the overwhelming number of residents that have left the city since 2000. The city that came from a bustling 2 million residents has dropped down to less than 800,000. In 10 years, the city has seen the population decline by 237,500 residents–the largest decline in American history for any city with over 100,00 residents.

According to their report, now the once urban center of the north has turned into a dilapidated crack house bereft of inhabitants. The present mayor, David Bing, has committed to tearing down 10,000 vacant residential buildings. But, while that may sound progressive, the city will really appear to be a wasteland when he leaves those massive holes all over the city.

Read here and say a prayer for the once beloved Motown. That’s got to be the way to help the city make a turnaround. It definitely feels like only God can save it.

Detroit Is On Fire!

What more can the city of Detroit take? The city has suffered economic blow after economic blow and now the city is burning down. If you haven’t been to the place lately, there are areas where whole blocks are vacant and homes burnt out as if a war had taken place there. Neighborhoods are shells of their former selves. Now yesterday it appears that the city was trying to rival the Great Chicago Fire while also being ranked as the Most Stressed City in America.
The stress is obvious with the unemployment rate over 14 percent and a lot of the neighborhoods’ visible declaration of hopelessness via vacancy. Some homes have been vacant for a year or more, yet you would not be the wiser for the manicured lawns…if you’re lucky. Some neighborhoods are so overgrown there is no evidence that homes were there at all. That might be a very good reason why the fire that occurred yesterday swept through several neighborhoods and dozens of homes so swiftly. Let’s pray that Detroit’s Mayor David Bing will have a solution with his idea “The Detroit Strategic Framework Plan,” which is supposed to reshape the use of the land in Detroit to improve the economy. The first meeting will be September 14.

Check out the devastating fires. God bless you Detroit!

Body of Former NBA Player Lorenzen Wright Found

Police officials in Memphis have found the body of missing former NBA basketball star Lorenzen Wright in a wooded area in southeast part of the city.

A law enforcement source confirmed to the Memphis Commercial Appeal newspaper the body was that of Wright, who has been missing since July 19, though the Memphis Police Department won’t officially comment. Police are referring to their investigation as a “death investigation.”

Wright, 35, recently flew from Atlanta to Memphis to visit friends and his six children, friends said.

According to sources, a 9-1-1 call was made from Wright’s cell phone on July 19. A fire dispatcher could hear the loud blasts of several gunshots. The cellphone call ended at that point.

The body was found by someone who called police today.

The 6-11 Wright starred at the University of Memphis before being drafted No. 7 overall in 1996 by the L.A. Clippers. He played for the Atlanta Hawks from 1999-2001, spent the next five seasons with Memphis, and returned to the Hawks for two more years in 2006-08. He last played for Cleveland in 2008-09.

Before he went missing, Wright, split his time between Atlanta and Memphis, according to AJC.com.
