It might turn out to be a premature rugby obituary, but there’s an over-riding sense that Jerome Kaino’s departure ends not just a good All Black career, but one of the great loose-forward combinations.
Kaino, who turns 29 next month, announced yesterday he would take a two-year contract with Japanese club Toyota. The deal is one of rugby’s richest, worth more than $1 million a year.
Yesterday he revealed how he wrestled with the decision and in the end the two hardest calls he made were to his captain and coach.
It was under the tutelage of Steve Hansen, as All Blacks forwards coach, that Kaino turned from raw-boned, yet a little flaky, to a consistent blindside behemoth.
With the peerless Richie McCaw and Kieran Read, they formed a back-row combination that lacks the mystique of Nathan, Tremain, Lochore and Whetton, Jones, Shelford, but nothing else.
“Steve was disappointed. That was probably the hardest phone call that I had to make, along with ringing Richie, but he wished me the best.
It was a tough phone call to make,” Kaino said.
“Richie was similar. I always wanted to play with him and I still thought I’d keep playing with him for more years to come.
“But this is only for now … hopefully, maybe in the future, we’ll be able to play alongside each other again.”
It’s a reassuring sentiment, but one that needs to be balanced by reality. Reintegration will be difficult.
“I leave the door open for someone else to take the jersey and take the spot. I’m not saying it’s going to be easy if I decide to come back, but it’s all part of sport. You give someone an opportunity, it’s a challenge to get back.”
Time stands still for no flanker and it is hard to believe that someone who plays a power position like Kaino can melt into a vastly inferior competition and return with the same steely constitution he left with.
Still, if the 48-test veteran had nothing more to show for his career than the body of work he put together during last year’s World Cup, it would leave an impressive legacy.

What appears to be snow is actually spider webs blanketing an Australian farm. (Daniel Munoz/Reuters)
Thousands of normally solitary wolf spiders have blanketed an Australian farm after fleeing a rising flood.
Reuters reports that the flooding has forced more than 8,000 Australian (human) residents from their homes in the city of Wagga Wagga in New South Wales. But for every temporarily displaced person, it appears several spiders have moved in to fill the void.
“What we’ve seen here is a type of wolf spider,” Owen Seeman, an arachnid expert at Queensland Museum, told Reuters. “They are trying to hide away (from the waters).”
The Australian Museum’s entomology collections manager Graham Milledge told Reuters that there’s even a term for the phenomenon, “ballooning,” and that it is typical behavior for spiders forced to escape rising waters.
You can watch a video here of researchers on the hunt for ballooning spiders from the safety of a hot air balloon.
Thankfully for local residents, the occupying arachnids are not likely to set up permanent residence, a la the 1977 William Shatner clunker “Kingdom of the Spiders.” Weather reports say the flood waters in Wagga Wagga have begun receding, meaning that locals will soon be returning to their homes and the wolf spiders will also be returning to their natural underground habitats.
A dog casually walks through the ballooning spider webs (Daniel Munoz/Reuters)
And it turns out the spiders are actually doing quite a bit of good while setting up shop above ground. The spiders are feasting on mosquitoes and other insect populations that have boomed with the increased moisture brought about by the rising waters.
“The amount of mosquitoes around would be incredible because of all this water,” Taronga Zoo spider keeper Brett Finlayson told the Sydney Morning Herald. “The spiders don’t pose any harm at all. They are doing us a favor. They are actually helping us out.”
As amazing as this display may be, it’s not the first time photographers have captured massive displaced spider migrations. One of the most famous pictures of 2011, above, showed millions of spiders and other insects in Pakistan that had formed massive web clusters in trees to escape rising floodwaters.
“It was largely spiders,” Russell Watkins, U.K. Department for International Development, told National Geographic. “Certainly, when we were there working, if you stood under one of these trees, dozens of small, very, very tiny spiders would just be dropping down onto your head.”

Which product at this year’s South by Southwest technology conference received more attention than perhaps any other?
Homeless people as wireless transmitters.
A marketing agency touched off a wave of criticism and debate when it hired members of the local homeless population to walk around carrying mobile Wi-Fi devices, offering conferencegoers Internet access in exchange for donations.
BBH Labs, the innovation unit of the international marketing agency BBH, outfitted 13 volunteers from a homeless shelter with the devices, business cards and T-shirts bearing their names: “I’m Clarence, a 4G Hotspot.”
They were told to go to the most densely packed areas of the conference, which has become a magnet for those who want to chase the latest in technology trends.
The smartphone-toting, social-networking crowds often overwhelm cellular networks in the area, creating a market that BBH Labs hoped to serve with the “Homeless Hotspots” project, which it called a “charitable experiment.”
$20 a day plus tips
It paid each participant $20 a day, and they were also able to keep whatever customers donated in exchange for the wireless service.
But as word of the project spread on the ground and online, it hit a nerve among many who said that turning down-and-out people into wireless towers was exploitative and discomfiting.
Tim Carmody, a blogger at Wired, described the project as “completely problematic” and sounding like “something out of a darkly satirical science-fiction dystopia.”
A commenter on the BBH Labs blog offered mock praise for the project, then complained that “my homeless hotspot keeps wandering out of range, and it’s ruining all my day trades!”
On Monday, the project’s scheduled last day, BBH Labs was scrambling to explain itself.
Saneel Radia, the director of innovation at BBH Labs who oversaw the project, said the company was not taking advantage of the homeless volunteers.
He said that the company had had success with other such experiments, including one in which it gave homeless people in New York cellphones and Twitter accounts as a way to call attention to their plight.
Mr. Radia said he modeled the hot spot project after the street newspapers that homeless people sell for a dollar.
“We saw it as a means to raise awareness by giving homeless people a way to engage with mainstream society and talk to people,” he said. “The hot spot is a way for them to tell their story.”
‘Honest day of work’
Mitchell Gibbs, the director of development at Front Steps, the shelter that houses the project volunteers, said he advised Mr. Radia on how best to set up the program.
He said he was surprised by all the criticism of the project, which he said had inspired an “entrepreneurial spirit” among its homeless participants.
The human hot spots seemed unconcerned as well. One volunteer, Clarence Jones, 54, said he was originally from New Orleans and became homeless in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
“Everyone thinks I’m getting the rough end of the stick, but I don’t feel that,” Mr. Jones said. “I love talking to people and it’s a job. An honest day of work and pay.”
But the program’s critics zeroed in on the divide between its impoverished vendors and Internet-bubble customers.
Adam Hanft, chief executive of the marketing advisory firm Hanft Projects, said that even if the effort was well intended, it seemed to turn a blind eye to that disconnect.
“There is already a sense that the Internet community has become so absurdly self-involved that they don’t think there’s any world outside of theirs,” he said.

Adolfo Davis had been 14 years old for just two months when he made the mistake that changed his life.
In October 1990, he was living on Chicago’s South Side with a grandmother who could barely care for him. His father was gone. His mother was a drug addict. He was teased because he often wore the same clothes to school. He committed petty crimes to get money for food. He found family in a gang, and one night, two much older gang members brought him along on what he believed was going to be a robbery. Two men were killed, though Davis never fired his gun.
An 8th grader when the crime occurred, Davis was tried as an adult, convicted and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.
On March 20, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments on whether juveniles like Davis should receive life sentences without parole for murder. The cases in front of the court involve 14-year-olds from Alabama and Arkansas, but advocates hope that the court will rule in favor of the youths and extend its ruling to all who committed murder as a juvenile. Already, the court has ruled unconstitutional sentencing laws providing life terms for crimes other than murder and has outlawed the death penalty for juveniles.
Since Davis was sent to prison, he has turned his life around, according to his attorneys. He has renounced his gang membership, has gotten an education, writes poetry and helps steer youngsters away from the gang life. Next month, the now 35-year-old who has spent two decades behind bars _ more years than he was free _ will have a hearing before the Prisoner Review Board; he is seeking clemency from Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn. He has support from clergy and even some job offers.
Because Davis is not eligible for parole, a commutation is his only option to prove he has been rehabilitated and deserves his freedom.
“He should have a chance to have a chance. Right now, he doesn’t have the opportunity to show somebody he’s been rehabilitated,” said attorney Joshua Sohn, a lawyer with the firm DLA Piper in New York, who argues that Davis’ sentence is too harsh for someone so young. “He’s acknowledged he was there and he’s responsible for what he did. But it’s not too late to save his life and give him an opportunity. That’s all he wants.”
In Illinois, where Davis was sentenced, the laws on juvenile murderers date to the late 1970s, when crime by juveniles was on the rise. The violent crime wave of the late 1980s and early 1990s, much of it tied to the crack cocaine epidemic, hardened tough-on-crime views, as did predictions of a generation of super-predators.
So it is that in Illinois children as young as 13 can be sentenced to life without parole, often in cases in which the sentence is mandatory. At 15 or older, juveniles can be sentenced to life without parole even if they merely acted as a lookout or the driver of a getaway car and were unaware that their co-defendants had weapons or were planning to commit murder.
Those predictions of super-predators, however, never came to pass. And advances in our understanding of brain development show that juveniles have little impulse control or the capability to fully consider or appreciate the lifetime of consequences some of their actions hold. At the same time, experts say juveniles have a greater capacity for rehabilitation, particularly if they are given the right treatment.
What’s more, advocates say offenders so young cannot meaningfully help with their defense. Mandatory life without parole sentences, meantime, strip judges of the opportunity to consider the background or other circumstances that might argue against a natural life sentence.
Not that advocates want all juveniles released. They simply say the door should never shut to the possibility of a life outside prison.
“It’s not a guarantee of parole. It’s the opportunity for parole,” said Lawrence Wojcik, an attorney at the firm DLA Piper in Chicago and the lead author of a friend-of-the-court brief filed by the American Bar Association. “A juvenile has a less developed sense of right and wrong. They should have the opportunity to prove that, at some point, they have been rehabilitated and they are fit to rejoin the community.”
Opponents say that murderers sentenced to life without parole, no matter how young, do not deserve the chance to be free. Jennifer Bishop-Jenkins is among those opponents. She worked hard to end the death penalty in Illinois but parts company with fellow criminal justice reform advocates on this issue, in large part because it will force the families of victims to again confront tragedies when inmates apply for release.

The Trayvon Martin story has gathered steam all over the country with outrage that has sparked online petitions and planned protests in Miami-Dade, Florida.
Not only that, the FBI investigation that the Martin family has been pleading for has been granted. But, is all of the nation’s efforts, including those from residents living in the community where Trayvon Martin was killed, enough?
Ed Schultz of MSNBC’s The Ed Show, pointed out on Monday night the many people who have gone scott free because of Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law. This law is the very reason why George Zimmerman has not been arrested yet. The man should have been considered a threat and detained because of his past with the Sanford police department if nothing else.
Schultz mentioned Zimmerman’s past arrest for resisting arrest, but he also mentioned that he assaulted an officer. Not only that, Zimmerman has placed 47 calls to Sanford police department prior to this incident. There are plenty of factors present, without an FBI probe, that any second grader could assess and find suspicious enough to call for an arrest warrant on this fool.

There are plenty of factors present, without an FBI probe, that any second grader could assess and find suspicious enough to call for an arrest warrant on this fool.
But, the law in place protects jerks like Zimmerman stating:
“A person is justified in the use of deadly force and does not have a duty to retreat if…he or she reasonably believes that such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm.”
The other shocking element of this law is that just five months after its implementation October 1, 2005, there were 13 self-defense shootings and only one of the individuals that were shot was armed. Six of the people in those shootings were killed.
The national rifle association was somehow able to get this law passed against lawmakers that were against it. Let’s get aware and get busy. There are surely other loophole laws like this one in other states that are keeping criminals like Zimmerman on the street. But, for the Martin case, specifically, use this info to get active on this young man’s case. We couldn’t defend Trayvon, but we can stand up for him and his family now.
