Pot legalization efforts forge ahead in key states

Efforts to legalize marijuana for recreational use are gaining momentum in Washington state and Colorado, despite fierce opposition from the federal government and a decades-long cultural battle over America’s most commonly used illicit drug.

Officials in Washington state on Friday said an initiative to legalize pot has enough signatures to qualify for the ballot in November. In Colorado, officials are likely this week to make a similar determination about an initiative there.

Supporters are prepared to possibly spend millions of dollars ahead of the November ballot, when they hope a strong voter turnout, particularly among youth, for the U.S. presidential election will aid their cause.

“Whether it’s make or break depends on what public opinion does after 2012, but in terms of voter turnout this is the best year to do it,” said Alison Holcomb, director of New Approach Washington, the initiative’s sponsor.

While 16 states, including Washington and Colorado, along with the nation’s capital, now allow marijuana use for medical purposes, cannabis remains an illegal narcotic under U.S. law – and public opinion is sharply divided on the merits of full legalization.

California voters turned back a ballot initiative to legalize marijuana for recreational use in 2010, in part because of concerns about how production and sale of the drug would be regulated.

Undeterred, supporters of the Washington state initiative say it represents the “grown-up” approach to legalization.

Sales would only be allowed to adults 21 and older through marijuana-only stores licensed by the state Liquor Control Board, which would also oversee production and processing of the drug. Laws on drunken driving would be amended to include maximum blood content thresholds for THC, the main psychoactive element in pot plants.

Colorado already has a robust regulatory system for medical marijuana that includes a registry of over 80,000 card-carrying patients and rules governing how physicians and distributors operate. Here, too, legalization advocates are stressing a rational regulatory approach.

“Voters aren’t being asked to imagine as much as they are in other states, they have seen that marijuana can be regulated and it doesn’t result in significant problems,” said Mason Tvert, co-director of the Colorado-based Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol.

Organizers of the Washington effort have collected over $1.1 million in campaign funds, with $250,000 of that coming from Progressive Insurance chairman Peter Lewis, public disclosure records show.

Loren Collingwood, senior researcher for the nonpartisan Washington Poll run by the University of Washington, said the initiative could pass, but that backers must spend between $2 million and $4 million to run a competitive campaign.

A poll done by the university in October found 48 percent of Washington residents support the idea of pot legalization, but that was not tied to any particular initiative.

“If young voters turn out in droves like they did in 2008 or even start to approach those numbers … then I think this will pass, but they very well may not,” Collingwood said.

Pot legalization supporters have argued for decades that prohibition has failed to curb pot use, and that the policy enriches drug cartels, hurts casual users and deprives governments of a potentially lucrative source of tax revenue.

SOCIAL SECURITY – WTF???

Who Gets Your Social Security When You Die?????

As the Sister Says, Wake up!!!!!!

—KEEP PASSING THIS AROUND UNTIL EVERY ONE HAS READ IT…..
… SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT….

THE ONLY THING WRONG WITH THIS CALCULATION IS THEY FORGOT TO FIGURE IN
THE PEOPLE WHO DIED BEFORE THEY COLLECTED THEIR SOCIAL SECURITY!!!!
WHERE DID THAT MONEY GO?????????????

This was sent to me, I am forwarding it because it does touch a nerve
in me. This is another example of what Rick Perry called
“TREASON in high places” !!! Get angry and pass this on!

Remember, not only did you contribute to Social Security but your
employer did too. It totaled 15% of your income before taxes. If you
averaged only $30K over your working life, that’s close to $220,500.

If you calculate the future value of $4,500 per year (yours & your
employer’s contribution) at a simple 5% (less than what the govt. pays
on the money that it borrows), after 49 years of working you’d have
$892,919.98.

If you took out only 3% per year, you’d receive $26,787.60 per year and
it would last better than 30 years (until you’re 95 if you retire at
age 65) and that’s with no interest paid on that final amount on
deposit! If you bought an annuity and it paid 4% per year, you’d have a
lifetime income of $2,976.40 per month.

The folks in Washington have pulled off a bigger Ponzi scheme than
Bernie Madhoff ever had.

Entitlement my ass, I paid cash for my social security insurance!!!!
Just because they borrowed the money, doesn’t make my benefits some
kind of charity or handout!!

Congressional benefits —- free healthcare, outrageous retirement
packages, 67 paid holidays, three weeks paid vacation, unlimited paid
sick days, now that’s welfare, and they have the nerve to call my
social security retirement entitlements?

We’re “broke” and can’t help our own Seniors, Veterans, Orphans,
Homeless

In the last months we have provided aid to Haiti, Chile , and Turkey, Japan,
And now Pakistan ……home of bin Laden. Literally, BILLIONS of
DOLLARS!!!

Our retired seniors living on a ‘fixed income’ receive no aid nor do
they get any breaks while our government and religious organizations
pour Hundreds of Billions of $$$$$$’s and Tons of Food to Foreign
Countries!

They call Social Security and Medicare an entitlement even though most
of us have been paying for it all our working lives and now when it’s
time for us to collect, the government is running out of money. Why did
the government borrow from it in the first place? Imagine if the
*GOVERNMENT* gave ‘US’ the same support they give to other countries.

Sad isn’t it?

Validation for Lennis

She predicted the weather in Washington State would be very cold and icy, not that much snow.  Last week they experienced one day of snow, and then a ice storm came in, which left 100′s of thousand folks without power. Kudos to you Lennis, good call.

8 Flu Shot Pros and Cons You May Not Know About

Every year you probably ask yourself the same thing: Should I get a flu shot this year, or should I pass it by?

It’s understandable that you might feel uncertain. There’s a lot of confusing information floating around out there about flu vaccines, which are available either as a shot or as a nasal spray. For instance, a recent study indicated that flu vaccines offer you only “moderate protection” from catching this season’s flu. That’s hardly inspiring. On the other hand, “moderate protection” is better than no protection at all, right?

What should you do? The CDC recommends that everyone over the age of 6 months receive the flu vaccine each year, unless you are allergic to the vaccine. But even still, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

Here are a few flu shot pros and cons to consider as you weigh what’s right for you:

Pros:

Flu shots can be life-saving: In the United States alone, more than 200,000 people are hospitalized for the flu every year, and about 36,000 die from causes related to the flu. The prevention a flu vaccine provides could literally save your life.

Flu shots don’t cause the flu: Yes, it’s true that flu vaccines contain strains of the flu virus itself, but flu shots are made with a totally inactivated form of the virus. The nasal-spray flu vaccine is made with a severely weakened form of it. Neither type of flu vaccine puts you at risk of catching the flu.

Flu shots are safer than you might think: For a long time, many parents were concerned that a preservative that had been used in vaccines, thimerosal, was linked to autism in children. Studies have shown no link between vaccines that contain thimerosal and autism — and the study that originally sparked concern has been discredited and withdrawn. What’s more, nowadays, most flu vaccines given to children in the U.S. do not contain thimerosal, and adults can request thimerosal-free vaccines as well.

Flu shots are easy to get: These days, you don’t have to make a special trip to the doctor to get a flu shot. Many pharmacies will give you a shot — without an appointment, in a jiffy, and for a very reasonable fee.

Cons:

Flu shots may not be safe for some people: If you are allergic to eggs, flu shots, which are cultivated inside of chicken eggs, may put you at risk. Be sure to consult your doctor.

Flu shots can have minor side effects: Some people develop symptoms like soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given; low-grade fever; or aches. These are usually pretty mild and no cause for concern, and resolve within a day or two.

Flu shots aren’t a one-shot deal: Because flu viruses change each year, the vaccines are re-formulated annually to keep up. To make sure you’re protected, you have to get vaccinated again every year during flu season, which generally lasts from October to May. Health experts generally recommend getting it sooner (like before December) rather than later.

Flu shots aren’t 100 percent effective: A recent study found that flu shots were only about 59 percent effective in healthy adults. Your annual flu shot may protect you from this season’s most dominant strains of flu, but unfortunately, it won’t protect you from all the other bugs that might be floating around out there.

After weighing the pros and cons, do you plan to get a flu shot this year?

Enjoy the weekend, thanks for visiting my website.

What’s The Defining Moment Of Your Generation?

As a major new survey from Pew Research Center examines the generation gap in politics, we take a closer look at what, besides year of birth, differentiates one generation from the next. From the dawn of rock ‘n’ roll to the emergence of hip-hop, from “We Like Ike” to “Yes We Can,” from a man on the moon to an iPhone in the pocket, here are some highlights from each of the four generations covered in the survey.

The Silent Generation

As adults, the silent generation heard President Kennedy’s 1961 vow to put a man on the moon. In 1969, they watched it happen.

  • Members of the “silent generation” (ages 66 to 83) now view Social Security as the top voting issue, but before they were senior citizens, they witnessed the birth of rock ‘n’ roll and watched from Earth as Neil Armstrong planted the U.S. flag on the moon. The first presidential election in which they would have been eligible to vote was in 1952, when Republican Dwight Eisenhower won by a landslide against Democrat Adlai Stevenson. Many witnessed and participated in the African-American civil rights movement and mourned the death of President John F. Kennedy. When the oldest members turned 25, the Academy Award for best picture went to the 1953 romantic film From Here To Eternity, and Audrey Hepburn won Best Actress for her role in Roman Holiday. The silent generation also saw one of the most amazing upsets in sports history, when 22-year-old Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) defeated Sonny Liston to become the boxing heavyweight champion in 1964.

Baby Boomers

The boomers came of age during the era of free love, the Vietnam War and Woodstock.

At 26 percent of the U.S. population, baby boomers (ages 47 to 65) are the largest and, more recently, the gloomiest generation. Their arrival led to a dramatic rise in demand for housing, cars and roads. They were the generation preoccupied with the Vietnam War, participants in the 1969 Woodstock Festival, and helped launch the environmental movement. After the voting age was lowered to 18 with the 26th Amendment, the first presidential election in which teens were eligible to vote was in 1972, when Republican Richard Nixon won with more than 60 percent of the vote against Democrat George McGovern. Baby boomers see themselves as ever youthful, with the typical boomer saying that old age doesn’t begin until age 72. When the oldest members turned 25, the Academy Award for best picture went to the 1971 action film The French Connection, and Jane Fonda won Best Actress for her role in Klute. Baby boomers grieved after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and saw the resignation of President Nixon after the Watergate scandal. They also saw the appointment of the first black Supreme Court justice, Thurgood Marshall, in 1967.

 Generation X

Gen Xers were the first kids to play video games and tune into MTV’s music videos after school.

Generation X (ages 31 to 46) sometimes feels ignored as the “in-between generation.” These children were the first generation of “latchkey kids” with dual-income families and an increasing divorce rate among their boomer parents. They saw the end of the Cold War, the fall of communism and the dismantling of the Berlin Wall. With the rise of MTV and the beginnings of the Internet, they became a technologically savvy and entrepreneurial group. They were first eligible to vote in 1984, when Republican Ronald Reagan won a second term against Democrat Walter Mondale. When the oldest members turned 25, the Academy Award for best picture went to the 1990 epic Dances With Wolves, and Joe Pesci won Best Supporting Actor for his role in Good Fellas. Generation X witnessed the end of apartheid in South Africa and the sale of the first Apple Macintosh computers in 1984.

  • The Millennial Generation

Millennials grew up in a wired world, where white ear buds are an expected accessory.

The millennial generation (ages 18 to 30) is the most diverse — 41 percent identify themselves as Hispanic or nonwhite. Millennials grew up in an environment of unrest and heightened security, coming of age in a post-Sept. 11 world. They are referred to as digital natives and are often the first consumers of the newest technologies and gadgets. They were first eligible to vote in 1992, when Democrat Bill Clinton won against incumbent Republican George H.W. Bush. When the oldest members turned 25, the Academy Award for best picture went to the 2006 thriller The Departed, and An Inconvenient Truth, about former Vice President Al Gore’s climate change campaign, won the award for Best Documentary. Though they were hardest hit by the economic downturn, millennials are still upbeat and optimistic about the future.

Interracial Marriage On the Rise, but Are Race Relations Improved?

Lately, we’ve been reporting on similarities of race relations in this country today as opposed to that of old.  But, now there are reports that interracial marriage between African Americans and whites are on the rise.  Other minority groups aren’t seeing a significant difference in their rate of marriage to whites.

USA Today reports that the study, published in the October edition of the Journal of Marriage and Family, found that in 2008, that of all black marriages, 10.7% were, in the past year, married to whites.  The measure they use to show a significant increase is that in 1980,  there were only 3% of said marriages.

But, Roderick Harrison, a demographer at Howard University and the Joint Center for Political and Economical Studies pointed out that we are still the least “assimilated.” The numbers show that Asians in 2008, married whites at the rate of 34% and Hispanics to non-Hispanics at 28%.

But none of this so-called benchmark of integration has done anything to remedy the lack of opportunities for black America.  As the director of the Cornell Population Center and the study’s co-author, Daniel Lichter, put it, “This doesn’t imply that we’ve moved into a post-racial society.”  The number of black and white marriages still remain very low.

The lead author on the interracial marriage study, Zhenchao Qian, a sociology professor at Ohio State University, suggests that the more opportunities African Americans experience by way of “higher levels of education” and in the workplace, the more interaction they have with whites on those levels, thus suggesting that African Americans have made more economical and social progress since 1980.

But as Harrison stated in the report, it still suggests ”that the divide in this country remains between blacks and everybody else.”  There has not been a major exodus into opportunity for African Americans.  The majority of interracial marriages between blacks and whites, by Qian’s admission, in at least the last 10 years, can probably be found between the more wealthy of the two groups.

The insinuated element of the report is that integration shows more progress, but we’re still watching the first African American President be told on the Congressional floor during his speech that he lied, we watched Troy Davis be put to death based on speculation, and our children still lag behind in educational resources.

The interracial marriage shouldn’t be weighed against opportunity and/or integration, but the report’s significance in those areas is insinuated.  We are happy for those who can find happiness with anyone.  That’s the hot commodity of the day.  Who cares who you’re married to as long as you’re happy.
