It might turn out to be a premature rugby obituary, but there’s an over-riding sense that Jerome Kaino’s departure ends not just a good All Black career, but one of the great loose-forward combinations.
Kaino, who turns 29 next month, announced yesterday he would take a two-year contract with Japanese club Toyota. The deal is one of rugby’s richest, worth more than $1 million a year.
Yesterday he revealed how he wrestled with the decision and in the end the two hardest calls he made were to his captain and coach.
It was under the tutelage of Steve Hansen, as All Blacks forwards coach, that Kaino turned from raw-boned, yet a little flaky, to a consistent blindside behemoth.
With the peerless Richie McCaw and Kieran Read, they formed a back-row combination that lacks the mystique of Nathan, Tremain, Lochore and Whetton, Jones, Shelford, but nothing else.
“Steve was disappointed. That was probably the hardest phone call that I had to make, along with ringing Richie, but he wished me the best.
It was a tough phone call to make,” Kaino said.
“Richie was similar. I always wanted to play with him and I still thought I’d keep playing with him for more years to come.
“But this is only for now … hopefully, maybe in the future, we’ll be able to play alongside each other again.”
It’s a reassuring sentiment, but one that needs to be balanced by reality. Reintegration will be difficult.
“I leave the door open for someone else to take the jersey and take the spot. I’m not saying it’s going to be easy if I decide to come back, but it’s all part of sport. You give someone an opportunity, it’s a challenge to get back.”
Time stands still for no flanker and it is hard to believe that someone who plays a power position like Kaino can melt into a vastly inferior competition and return with the same steely constitution he left with.
Still, if the 48-test veteran had nothing more to show for his career than the body of work he put together during last year’s World Cup, it would leave an impressive legacy.

Kobe Bryant may have broken Michael Jordan’s All-Star game record last night, but he also walked away from the event with a broken nose. Dwyane Wade hit Kobe on the nose while the Laker was trying to convert a layup during the third quarter. Bryant hit his two free-throws and continued to play, but was later diagnosed with a nasal fractureScott Brooks, who coached the All-Star West team, said:
“I knew he got hit in the nose and had a bloody nose, but other than that I didn’t think it was bothering him. That’s the type of guy he is. He’s not going to let anybody know that he was in pain or had any issues until after the game.”
Kobe didn’t get a chance to speak after the game since he was taken to get his nose examined, but Wade took a few questions about the foul. Wade said:
“I didn’t try to draw no blood, but I took a foul. Kobe fouled me two times in a row, so he’s still got one up on me. But I’m glad that everything was cool and we got back to being competitive and having fun.”
Bryant ended the game with 27 points and overtook Michael Jordan as the player with the all-time highest scorer in All-Star Game history.
Bryant and Wade will get a chance to face off against each other in a slightly more competitive game this weekend. The Miami Heat will travel to Los Angeles on Sunday to take on the Lakers.
Why he is a local hero: Osborne is working to bring people of different faiths together to solve many of today’s problems.
The way Pastor Osborne sees it, people of different faiths waste too much time arguing about things that aren’t important while issues, such as drug addiction and youth gang violence, go unaddressed.
“There are so many faiths divided in the community. Everyone thinks they are going to heaven and that the other person is wrong. It breaks my heart because for years I have been in the street teaching the gospel of unity. I’m a Christian. I believe Jesus Christ is the son of God, but everyone doesn’t think like me. The question is what can we do to help the children,” says Osborne.
Osborne has tackled this issue by entering into a variety of interfaith efforts, including the Newark Interfaith Coalition for Hope and Peace. The group supports other grassroots organizations seeking to stem the tide of violence in and around Newark. The most dramatic of Osborne’s efforts, though, may be that Muslims, Christians, and Jehovah Witnesses alike attend Bethel Family and Youth Resource Center, his Newark, N.J., church.
It started a few years ago when Osborne ran an intensive life skills program that helped people dealing with addiction issues. Afterward, many of his attendees, who are of various faiths, began showing up at his church, because they felt a sense of togetherness at Osborne’s church.
During the services, Christians say, “Hallelujah,” and the Muslims say, “Alluh Akbar.” Muslims teach Christians Arabic, and there is an overall greater understanding and respect of one another’s faith. And that’s what is needed to challenge many of the social problems plaguing America today, says Osborne.
“Let us pastors and imams go out into the street at 2 a.m., where people are shooting one another. Let’s create employment. Let’s work together. I long for pastors and imams to unite and say, ‘We don’t have same theology, but let’s do what we have to do,’” says Osborne.
The move hasn’t come without criticism. Some think what Osborne’s doing is heretical, but Osborne sees proof of the opposite in the lives of the changed men and women of different faiths who step in to his church every week. It appears that many critics are actually fearful of what can be accomplished when people of different faiths come together around common goals.
“The only way to do this is to try and bring people together, where a Jewish can go to a masjid, a Muslim can go to a church, and a Christian can go to a synagogue,” said Osborne.

An ESPN writer got a little out of hand and too comfortable with his job and posted a headline with an ethnic slur.
The writer wrote the headline “Chink in the Armor” referencing the New York Knicks’ loss Friday night against the New Orleans Hornets.
The verbiage was only up for a little over a half-hour before being taken down, but the damage was done and warranted the network issuing an apology.
But that’s not the end of the racial madness.
The network apology also included a “sorry” for ESPN anchor Max Bretos’s comment on Wednesday night.
He stated, “If there is a chink in the armor, where can Lin improve his game?’”
This marked the third incident about Lin the network let slip.
The statement reads:
“At ESPN we are aware of three offensive and inappropriate comments made on ESPN outlets during our coverage of Jeremy Lin. Saturday we apologized for two references here. We have since learned of a similar reference Friday on ESPN Radio New York. The incidents were separate and different. We have engaged in a thorough review of all three and have taken the following action:
- The ESPN employee responsible for our Mobile headline has been dismissed.
- The ESPNEWS anchor has been suspended for 30 days.
- The radio commentator is not an ESPN employee.
We again apologize, especially to Mr. Lin. His accomplishments are a source of great pride to the Asian-American community, including the Asian-American employees at ESPN. Through self-examination, improved editorial practices and controls, and response to constructive criticism, we will be better in the future.”
However, the statement did not address whether the headline went through an editing process and if so, whether the editor was disciplined.
ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz told Journal-isms by email: “Not going beyond our public comment.”

“Nobody loved the game of baseball more than Gary Carter. Nobody enjoyed playing the game of baseball more than Gary Carter. He wore his heart on his sleeve every inning he played. For a catcher to play with that intensity in every game is special.”
— Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver
“The one thing I remember about Gary was his smile. He loved life and loved to play the game of baseball.”
— Former Mets teammate Mookie Wilson
“His nickname ‘The Kid’ captured how Gary approached life. He did everything with enthusiasm and with gusto on and off the field. His smile was infectious. He guided our young pitching staff to the World Series title in 1986 and he devoted an equal amount of time and energy raising awareness for a multitude of charities and community causes. He was a Hall of Famer in everything he did.”
“The one thing Gary stressed to us was team. He said individual goals were meaningless. He said the name on the front of the uniform was more important than the name on the back. That’s what I’ll take from my two years with him.”
— Mets pitcher Jonathon Niese, who played under Carter for two years in the minors
“I am so sad. The Kid has left us. I started calling him Kid the first time I met him. He was admired and loved.”
— Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench
“We both grew up in Southern Cal, though he was 3-to-4 years younger than I was. He was a great ballplayer and a tremendous family man, and I’ll miss him.”
— Hall of Fame pitcher Bert Blyleven
“We had a lot in common, from family to our profession. He endured a lot as a catcher, as did I. And making it to the Hall of Fame was over the top for Gary, as it has been for me. We knew each other for more than 30 years, he meant a lot to me. I’m crushed by his passing.”
— Hall of Fame catcher Carlton Fisk
