Retailers turn to Facebook to sell their wares

More of the world’s biggest marketers are selling their stuff at the place where consumers hanker to hang out: Facebook.

Think of it as the ultimate convenience for a mobile generation that considers it seriously inconvenient to leave Facebook — even for a moment — in order to go to a retailer’s website. Now, marketers from Express to J.C. Penney to Delta Air Lines are steering those purchases to their Facebook pages.
Within a few years, social media gurus say, the very notion of shopping on a retailer’s website will become dated. “Expecting people to come to your website is expecting them to make an extra effort,” explains Janet Fouts, a social media coach. “They’re already on Facebook.”

The numbers are dazzling. Facebook has roughly 500 million users — 250 million of whom are on the site every day. The average user has 130 friends. Each month, people spend a total 700 billion minutes on Facebook.

“It’s social networks like Facebook that are the center of people’s lives,” Fouts says. “It’s where their friends are. It’s where they play games. And it’s increasingly becoming where they shop.”

Indonesia: ‘No survivors’ after plane crashes off Papua

There were no survivors from the crash of an Indonesian passenger aircraft into the sea with up to 27 people on board, a navy officer says.

The plane went into the sea in poor weather just short of the airstrip serving the small port town of Kaimana, in the eastern province of West Papua.

Fifteen bodies have been recovered by rescuers searching for survivors.

The Indonesian archipelago relies heavily on air transport and has one of Asia’s worst air safety records.

“I can confirm that all the passengers were killed when the plane exploded as it crashed into the sea,” the unnamed navy officer, who took part in the search and rescue operation, told ElShinta radio.

“The aircraft was smashed to pieces… We found 15 bodies floating on the water and the other passengers are trapped inside the wreckage.”

Transport ministry official Bambang Ervan told AFP news agency there were 21 passengers and six crew on board the twin turbo-prop plane, operated by Merpati Airlines, which was flying from the coastal city of Sorong.

Indonesia has seen a number of commercial airline crashes in recent years.

In 2007, the European Union banned all of Indonesia’s airlines including the national carrier Garuda.

In 2009, Garuda and three other carriers were taken off the EU’s list, but Merpati Airlines remains on it.

Golf great Seve Ballesteros dies at 54

Seve Ballesteros, one of golf’s most gifted and charismatic players, has died after a long battle with cancer.

The 54-year-old passed away surrounded by his family at his home in Pedrena, northern Spain, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Ballesteros was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2008 after losing consciousness at Madrid Airport.

The five-time major winner had four operations to remove the tumour as well as undergoing chemotherapy.

The funeral will take place on Wednesday at the San Pedro parish church in his home village of Pedrena, near Santander.

In a statement, the Ballesteros family expressed gratitude for the “support and gestures of love” they had received and asked for “respect and privacy at such a painful time”.

Ballesteros, who claimed 87 titles over his career, won the Open in 1979, 1984 and 1988 and became the first European to win the Augusta Masters in 1980, repeating the feat in 1983.

He also enjoyed a successful Ryder Cup career as both player and captain – playing in eight Ryder Cups and winning 20 points from 37 matches before guiding Europe to victory over the United States at Valderrama in 1997.

But it was his daring and flamboyant style that made Ballesteros special, transforming the image of golf and bringing a whole new audience to the sport.

The Voice

NBC has a hit on their hands with the singing competition show The Voice. Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, Cee-Lo Green and Christina Aguilera are the show’s judges, and the talent has been amazing. What sets this show apart from other singing reality shows is that you don’t see who is singing. You just hear their amazing voices. The ratings for the show have been impressive. Last week, they beat Dancing With The Stars in the ratings.

Hong Kong workers to enjoy minimum wage for first time

Hong Kong has introduced a minimum wage that is expected to benefit 270,000 low-paid workers, or around 10% of the working population.

Workers will now earn a minimum of HK$28 ($3.60; £2.18) per hour.

The legislation was passed in response to public pressure to narrow the territory’s wealth gap.

But the minimum wage has been resisted by the business community, who say it is too costly.

Business leaders say small businesses will be forced to lay off staff.

Hong Kong workers see wages rise
Critics also say the legislation is a departure from Hong Kong’s free-market roots.

With the exception of Singapore, most Asian countries now have a minimum wage or are considering one.

The move is expected to boost the pay of Hong Kong’s legions of street sweepers, security guards and restaurant workers.

“The employers now cannot squeeze the lowest paid sectors of society,” said Lee Cheuk-yan, head of the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions and a legislator.

Unions had campaigned for a minimum wage of HK$33 an hour and many workers say the wage increase will not cover rising living costs.

The government said it was forced to introduce the legislation after a voluntary minimum wage scheme in 2006 met with a tepid response from businesses.

Even before its implementation, the legislation has led to disputes between workers and employers.

Some employers have re-hired workers on new contracts with unpaid meal breaks and rest days to avoid paying a higher wage bill.

The legislation does not cover the territory’s almost 300,000 domestic helpers, who mainly come from the Philippines and Indonesia.

Cell Phone Junkies

The people who really need to read this article probably won’t because they’re too busy yapping on their cell phones. Maybe those who do read it can make a copy and somehow slip it to someone they know who has a cell phone addiction. Maybe businesses can post it in plain view for customers to see.

Cell phone junkies are becoming a menace to society because they are so into their own cellular world, that they are oblivious and insensitive to their surroundings (like a typical junkie). For instance, while at the bank the other day, three guys entered the doors just seconds apart from one another, and each was cussing loudly on their cell phones and saying things that were inappropriate for a public place. They did not seem to have a clue as to how their actions were affecting those around them, nor did they seem to care. It was like they had a license to say whatever they wanted on their own private cell phones – but in a public place?

Then there was the lady – in a crowded Subway restaurant during lunch hour – who was so busy talking on the phone with her “girl”, that she thought she’d ordered one thing, and when the server had wrapped and announced “one six inch turkey”, the lady (still talking on the phone) exclaimed, “I wanted ham not turkey!” The server insisted she said turkey, and she began to argue with him. Maybe she would have been more attentive to what she was getting had she not been so rudely annoying everyone with her loud conversation on her cell phone. Equally annoying was a similar situation in a Post Office line with a lady speaking a foreign language!

I’m sure we’ve all experienced the left turn lane when the arrow turns green, and the person at the head of the line is engrossed in a cell phone conversation, not realizing the arrow is green until those behind start laying on the horn. Where perhaps five cars could have made the turn, only three do before the arrow turns red again. What a waste of time and fuel! And we wonder why there is so much frustration and disdain in our society today. Things like this don’t help at all.

For those who think it’s cool and okay to have indiscrete cell phone conversations in public places, please consider this old English proverb: “He who says what he likes, shall hear what he does not like.” Respect yourself if you want others to respect you.

I have used the 800-POLLUTE number to report air pollution; maybe there’s a way we can do the same for noise pollution. Maybe business owners could be empowered to refuse service to anyone who disturbs the peace with their disruptive cell phone conversations.

Small cracks found in three Southwest Airlines jets

Small, sub-surface cracks have been found in three more Southwest Airlines planes like those thought to have caused another to develop a hole in its cabin roof mid-flight, officials say.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it had been informed there were additional crack indications in the lap joints on the Boeing 737-300s.

Nineteen other 737-300s showed no problems and will return to service.

The plane with the ruptured fuselage landed safely in Arizona on Friday.

Some of the 118 people on board the flight, which had just taken off from Phoenix, reported hearing a loud bang as a 1.5m-long gash appeared.

The hole caused a sudden drop in cabin pressure, forcing pilots to make a controlled descent from 10,485m (34,400ft) to a military base. No-one was seriously injured, though a flight attendant was slightly hurt.

‘New and unknown issue’
On Sunday, a section of the 737-300′s ruptured fuselage was removed and sent to NTSB headquarters in Washington for in-depth analysis.

NTSB investigators also conducted inspections of other portions of the lap joint along the fuselage and found evidence of additional cracks.
