Death of Mia Amber Davis

More Details Emerge. People magazine has more details of the events leading to the death of plus size model Mia Amber Davis, though an official cause of death is still pending. Davis went to a Los Angeles clinic this week for surgery on her knee to ease pain from an old basketball injury exacerbated by wearing high heels and playing tennis. But after what was supposed to be a routine procedure on Monday, she complained of dizziness and had to be transported to Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center. At about 9 a.m. on Tuesday she was pronounced dead. “She seemed fine leading up to the procedure,” says Craig Harvey, chief investigator for the L.A. County Coroner. “She had no prior complaints and no significant prior medical history.” Davis’s sudden and mysterious death at age 36 stunned her family, including husband Michael Yard, and rocked the fashion industry, where Davis was a highly respected and influential plus-sized model based in New York. She also worked as an actress, appearing in “Road Trip.” “We’re really heartbroken,” says Madeline Jones, editor of PLUS Model Magazine. “We feel like our whole world collapsed. And the plus-sized industry is never going to be the same. She was such an advocate for plus-sized women. Wherever she went she was made up from head to toe, not a hair out of place. She loved herself. She looked good and felt good.” The cause of death remains unknown. Results of an autopsy are pending, and reports that a blot clot was to blame are “simply speculation,” says Davis’s cousin, Mignon Moore, a UCLA sociology professor. “We are absolutely heartbroken and devastated by the abruptness and tragic loss of Mia Amber,” her family says in a statement released by Moore. “She was a role model for people of all colors, shapes and sizes. She was a shining star and always encouraged others to live out their dreams.” In Road Trip in 2000, a 300-pound Davis appeared in what was played as a comedic love scene with super skinny D.J. Qualls.

Kobe Addresses Gay Slur on ESPN Radio; Plans to Appeal Fine

Kobe Bryant says he’s planning to appeal his NBA fine for hurling a gay slur during a game, calling the decision “standard protocol.”

During an interview on ESPN radio, Kobe also said, “The concern that I have is for those that follow what I say … look to me as a role model .. for them not to take what was said as a message of hate or a license to degrade … or to embarrass or tease … because that’s something I don’t wanna see have happen.”

Kobe said his message to people is, “It’s OK to be who you are.”

Kobe Bryant Fined $100, 000 for Slur; Apologizes to Gay Rights Org

The National Basketball Association fined Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers $100,000 on Wednesday for “offensive and inexcusable” comments he made during Tuesday night’s game, the league said in a statement.

NBA Commissioner David Stern called Bryant’s outburst “offensive and inexcusable.”

“While I’m fully aware that basketball is an emotional game, such a distasteful term should never be tolerated,” Stern said in a statement. “Kobe and everyone associated with the NBA know that insensitive or derogatory comments are not acceptable and have no place in our game or society.”

Meanwhile, TMZ is reporting that Bryant has apologized to a gay rights organization. The embattled lakers guard spoke with Human Rights Campaign head Joe Solmonese, who told TMZ:

“I applaud Kobe Bryant for his swift apology. We had a very sincere conversation in which he expressed his heartfelt regret for the hurt that his words caused.”

Solmonese adds: “He told me that it’s never OK to degrade or tease, and that he understands how his words could unfortunately give the wrong impression that this is appropriate conduct.

“At the end of a difficult day, I applaud Kobe for coming forward and taking responsibility for his actions.”

Kobe Bryant Releases Statement on Slur; Gay Rights Groups Unload

*Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant issued a statement Wednesday afternoon addressing the gay slur he appeared to have hurled at referee Bennie Adams during Tuesday’s game against the San Antonio Spurs.

As previously reported, Bryant was hit with a technical foul in the 3rd quarter, stormed to the bench, hit his seat before sitting down, threw a towel and then yelled, “Bennie!” toward the court. Bryant then leaned back and muttered what appeared to be the words, “f**king f**got!”

“What I said last night should not be taken literally,” Bryant said in a statement. “My actions were out of frustration during the heat of the game, period. The words expressed do NOT reflect my feelings towards the gay and lesbian communities and were NOT meant to offend anyone.”

The video from Tuesday’s game “is under review” by the NBA, league spokesman Tim Frank said to ESPNLosAngeles.com via email.

“We haven’t seen the video, so it would be inappropriate for us to comment on it,” a Lakers spokesperson told ESPNLosAngeles.com earlier Wednesday.

On Monday, the league rescinded Bryant’s 15th technical of the season. If it had stood, he would have received his 16th on Tuesday and would have been suspended for the Lakers’ season finale. If he receives another T on Wednesday, he would be suspended for the first game next season. Technical counts start over in the playoffs.

Meanwhile, advocacy groups condemned Bryant’s comments on Wednesday.

The Human Rights Campaign — a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization — said in a statement: “Hopefully Mr. Bryant will recognize that as a person with such fame and influence, the use of such language not only offends millions of LGBT people around the world, but also perpetuates a culture of discrimination and hate that all of us, most notably Mr. Bryant, should be working to eradicate.”

The president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, the nation’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender media advocacy and anti-defamation organization, also put out a statement.

“Discriminatory slurs have no place on or off the court,” Jarrett Barrios said. “Professional sports players need to set a better example for young people who use words like this on the playground and in our schools, creating a climate of intolerance and hostility. The LA Lakers have a responsibility to educate their fans about why this word is unacceptable.”

Clothing Designers get a grip!!!

As I was looking through one of entertainment magazines, it had a section on who looks better. What?
Nobody did, the clothes these designers believed look good in public is ricdiculous. Whats more the folks that believe they look good, look very inept ok SOS (stuck on stupid). I enjoy good fashion sense, and common sense. Most folks that are well to do, have folks that dressed them accordingly hopefully. My question are these folks blind – Stevie Wonder could see that.

Men and I’m sure women love to be well dressed. The options to well dressed gives me pause now days when I look out at the horizon of fashions. I do not wish to see your breast hitting me in my eyes while talking to you because you think your outfit is the bomb with so much exposure. As well as the slits and cut up the back, on the side, down the front. Just ask the man how he wants it served(!).

I’ve observed the more money one has the more they look like a fool when dressing. Not to be to generic, but it only takes common sense, and a good mirror to see does this work for me.

I love the old hollywood dresses from the era of the 20′s and 30′s women where so classic looking. Again that can happen today, if designers would love women dressed well, and not dressed for the money of a thing. Or emotional designer baggage.

Tyra Banks

Next season’s winner of America’s Next Top Model will get a cover on the Italian version of Vogue magazine.

Tyra’s Outta Here! Says Bye Bye on Final Show. It’s all over for Tyra. Larry King and others offered taped send-offs. Larry called her the ‘fiercest host’ in television. Even the queen of daytime, the Big O, Oprah Winfrey sent a recorded message saying she can’t wait to see what Tyra has in store for her next act.

Prosecutors Want Naomi Campbell Subpoenaed over Diamond

Prosecutors hoping to nail former Liberian president Charles Taylor for war crimes at a U.N.-backed court have asked judges to subpoena supermodel Naomi Campbell as a witness, reports the Associated Press. In a motion filed Thursday, prosecutors say they want Campbell to testify about uncut diamonds Taylor allegedly gave to her in South Africa in 1997. They say the runway diva told prosecutors through her lawyer that she was “concerned for her safety” and “did not want to involve herself in the case.”

Prosecutors claim Taylor gave arms and ammunition to brutal rebels during Sierra Leone’s civil war in exchange for diamonds. He denies the allegations. The prosecution is also seeking testimony from Mia Farrow, who claims Campbell told her about the alleged diamond gift. Farrow said she and Campbell were both guests at the home of South African president Nelson Mandela, where Taylor was also visiting. She said Campbell described in detail a middle of the night visit from two of Taylor’s men. “She said during the night, some men had knocked at her door and she, half asleep, had opened the door and it was representatives of President Charles Taylor and that they had given her a huge diamond,” Farrow told ABC News. “We were like, ‘oh my gosh.’”

Naomi Campbell

No charges for Naomi Campbell in Driver Incident. It wasn’t a cab driver but rather a “chauffeur” who accused the supermodel of beating him from the back seat of a luxury SUV before she hopped out and ran off. The Associated Press reports that police consulted with the Manhattan district attorney’s office and issued a harassment report against the tempermental catwalk queen, which doesn’t carry any penalty. Arrests are unlikely in the case, authorities said. Earlier Tuesday, the driver – who had been hired to drive Campbell around New York City – told police she hit him from behind and his head struck the steering wheel of the black Cadillac Escalade, causing bruising under his right eye. He pulled over in midtown Manhattan and got out to speak to a traffic agent, who alerted police. The chauffeur, who also drives Campbell’s boyfriend, decided not to pursue the matter criminally. It’s unclear if he would pursue it in civil court. Campbell was not at the scene when officers arrived, police said. She did not speak to police, but her assistant went to the station house where the driver gave his account. A spokesman for Campbell, who has previously pleaded guilty to assaulting people hired to work for her, said she would cooperate with police. “There shouldn’t be a rush to judgment,” spokesman Jeff Raymond said. “Naomi will cooperate voluntarily, and there is more to the story than meets the eye.” The 27-year-old driver, apparently hired just for the day, told police he picked Campbell up at a Manhattan hotel and was taking her to Astoria Studios, a TV and film studio complex in Queens, New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said.
