National Council of Negro Women

Washington, D.C. — Continuing their mutual commitment to the lives of Black women, on September 21, 2011, the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), the National Action Network (NAN), I Choose Life Health and Wellness Center (ICL), and members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) will present The Women’s Health Summit:

“Harnessing Our Power: “Mind, Body, and Soul” with a special focus on “HIV/AIDS and African American Women: The Forgotten Population” during the Annual Legislative Caucus (ALC) in Washington, DC. WHUR 96.3 FM-Washington is the official media sponsor.

The Women’s Health Summit will assemble a cohort of experts to discuss the myriad of health concerns and disparities that impact Black women, while also providing insight, valuable information and actions for healthy living.

“There are a plethora of diseases and health issues that continue to disproportionately affect Black women when compared to our counterparts,” says Avis Jones-DeWeever, PhD, author, policy analyst, and Executive Director, NCNW. “As organizations that are invested in the lives of Black women, we wanted to band together to encourage a holistic dialogue that’s solution-based and helps Black women to lead mentally, physically, and emotionally healthy lives.”

Not only are African American women more at risk for heart disease, cancer, stroke, high blood pressure, and diabetes, Black women also have the highest rates of obesity, are mostly likely to die during childbirth and mostly likely to suffer the tragedy of infant mortality. Regarding other areas of concern, African American women are less likely to receive accurate mental health diagnoses than their Caucasian counterparts. Additionally, African-American women experience domestic violence at a rate that’s 35% higher than Caucasian women and thus account for a disproportionate number of intimate partner homicides.

AIDS still remains a devastating killer of Black women, yet they continue to be relegated to footnotes in national dialogues. The rates of new HIV infections for Black women is nearly 15 times as high as that of Caucasian women and AIDS diagnosis for African American women is at a rate of 20 times higher.  HIV/AIDS-related conditions are now the leading cause of death for African American women aged 25-34 years.

The Women’s Health Summit will “host a panel focused on overall health to tackle domestic violence/sexual assault, sexual health and reproduction, mental health, infant mortality, and obesity.” And in efforts to reduce the continued impact of HIV/AIDS on Black women, the summit will also convene “HIV/AIDS and African American Women: The Forgotten Population,” a special focus panel, that will look back on the thirty years of the pandemic. The range of experts who will serve as summit panelists include: Gail Wyatt, PhD, University of Southern California; Tony Wafford, President & CEO, I Choose Life; Laura Meyers, PhD, President & CEO, Planned Parenthood-Metropolitan;  Willie J. Parker, MD, MPH, Former Medical Director, Planned Parenthood-Metropolitan;  Jamila Perritt, MD, Present Medical Director, Planned Parenthood-Metropolitan; Debra Fraser-Howze, Senior Vice President of Government and External Affairs, OraSure Technologies, Inc.; Dazon Dixon-Dialo, MPH, SisterLove; Monica Sweeney, MD, New York City Health Department; Cynthia Davis, MPH, Board Member, AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Assistant Professor, Medical Sciences Institute, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science.

Panel moderators will be: WHUR 96.3 FM news reporter Molette Green; Jeff Johnson, award-winning journalist, social activist and political commentator; Dr. Avis Jones-DeWeever, Executive Director, NCNW, and Dr.Tricia Bent-Goodley, Chair of the CAPS Sequence, Howard University, School of Social Work.

“We’re coming together to show Black women that despite these devastating facts, they are not alone,” says Tony Wafford, President & CEO, I Choose Life.  “As a unified force, we can develop solutions to enhance, preserve and protect the lives of Black women.”

The Women’s Health Summit will take place on Wednesday, September 21 from 5:30 pm – 9:00 pm at the National Headquarters of NCNW, 633 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20004.   Spacing is limited; please RSVP at
ncnwprograms@gmail.com.

Bombshell Announcement: Beyonce and Jay-Z are Preggers

If you missed the MTV Video Musicawards Sunday night, you missed the debut of the soon-to-be little Jay-Z and Beyonce. Yes that’s right, the singer is pregnant and has been the talk of the whole event, upstaging even Katy Perry’s 10 nominations and three moonman trophies. Before the show even began, on the black carpet, arriving in a loose fitting red gown Beyonce announced the pregnancy as she clutched her baby bump. Later that evening, she performed on stage in an atypical conservative spangled tux, but danced around in those high heels like nothing’s new. She didn’t say anything about the news at first, but when she ended the performance by taking off her jacket and rubbing her belly. At that point the crowd erupted in applause and cheering. So despite all of the show’s year-long planning, outrageous outfits and wild performances, Beyonce’s pregnancy was no doubt the highlight and main attraction all night long.

Winehouse Death Still a Mystery After Toxicology Report Comes Back

Results have come back about the death of Amy Winehouse, who died of unknown causes on July 23. According to a toxicology report, the singer did not have any illegal drugs in her system at the time of death. The report did however reveal that there was alcohol in her system. But the cause of death is still a mystery. In the meantime, while the world mourns the singer’s premature death, a tribute and surprise film debut of a Winehouse/Tony Bennett duet is expected to be revealed on the MTV Video Music Awards, which will air Sunday, Aug. 28 on what would have been the singer’s 28th birthday. “It was a thrill to record with Amy Winehouse and when you listen to the recording of ‘Body and Soul, it is a testament to her artistic genius and her brilliance as one of the most honest musicians I have ever known,” Bennett said in the statement.

Basketball Wives – can we say “ghetto”

How long will the insane fighting go on with VH-1’s Basketball Wives? I am sure this is not the vision that Shaunie O’Neal had when she created the show. The latest episode featured a virtual smackdown when Tami slammed the crap out of Castmate Meeka Claxton. Every week there is a fight, and it’s not just Basketball Wives. All of these female-based reality shows have fighting and screaming matches. I am sick of it, and I have decided I can no longer co-sign these shows. I always liked Tami Roman, but the producers have set her up like the drunk, crazy one. Evelyn Lozado is already looking for life after Basketball Wives. I hear she is in talks to join Dancing With The Stars.

SIDEBAR:  I’m so sick of all these “so called reality shows” give me a break!

Lauryn Hill – did marriage ever cross your mind?

The Kid Is Not My Son! No, this isn’t the Michael Jackson classic Billie Jean, but it’s Rohan Marley, the longtime partner of Singer Lauryn Hill. For seven months, Hill kept her pregnancy a secret, and Rohan said he wasn’t the father. Rohan and Hill have five children together, and when they met and hooked up, he was already married with two kids. Hill, 36, describes her relationship with Rohan as long and complex. She recently admitted he was not the father of her sixth child, a boy born last weekend. The baby came four weeks early, and Hill had to have emergency surgery. Rohan has been spotted with a Brazilian model who has not been quiet about her love for Rohan. Hill says she appreciates the well wishes, but now she is concentrating on her children.

Published reports say BET has put Mo’Nique’s late night talk show on indefinite hiatus. I told you last week about the reports of on set conflicts. I hear Mo’s husband Sidney Hicks was involved in those rumblings. The good news forMo’Nique is that she has signed on for a new movie project called Bumped. The Oscar-winning actress and comedienne said it took her a while to get around to acting again because she had been hard at work on her BET show. Looks like she’ll have the time now, insiders don’t expect The Mo’Nique Show to return.

Singer Amy Winehouse found dead in London home

Amy Winehouse, the beehived soul-jazz diva whose self-destructive habits overshadowed a distinctive musical talent, was found dead Saturday in her London home, police said. She was 27.

Winehouse shot to fame with the album “Back to Black,” whose blend of jazz, soul, rock and classic pop was a global hit. It won five Grammys and made Winehouse — with her black beehive hairdo and old-fashioned sailor tattoos — one of music’s most recognizable stars.

Police confirmed that a 27-year-old female was pronounced dead at the home in Camden Square northern London; the cause of death was not immediately known. London Ambulance Services said Winehouse had died before the two ambulance crews it sent arrived at the scene.

“I didn’t go out looking to be famous,” Winehouse told the Associated Press when “Back to Black” was released. “I’m just a musician.”

  1. wed by fame, and by Winehouse’s demons. Tabloids lapped up the erratic stage appearances, drunken fights, stints in hospital and rehab clinics. Performances became shambling, stumbling train wrecks, watched around the world on the Internet.

Born in 1983 to taxi driver Mitch Winehouse and his pharmacist wife Janis, Winehouse grew up in the north London suburbs, and was set on a showbiz career from an early age. When she was 10, she and a friend formed a rap group, Sweet ‘n’ Sour — Winehouse was Sour — that she later described as “the little white Jewish Salt ‘n’ Pepa.
