A Jamaican scientist is being celebrated on the international stage for finding an effective treatment for some types of cancer.
Dr Lawrence Williams, a research scientist at the Scientific Research Council (SRC), has been awarded an international patent on a compound isolated from the Guinea Hen Weed as a protein complex of dibenzyl trisulphide.
The SRC said the protein complex has the ability to kill a wide range of cancers.
The Jamaican’s discovery has the potential to fight various kinds of cancers, a few of which are: melanoma, lung cancer and breast cancer. The molecule also has implications for the treatment of ageing diseases.
The SRC noted that, with more than 13 years dedicated to this research, Williams has revealed that the complex is superior in killing cancer cells relative to the pure compound found in the Guinea Hen Weed-dibenzyl trisulphide.
“This remarkable breakthrough comes at a time when the world is crippled by the effects of cancer, as it is one of the leading killers globally,” the SRC asserted.
The SRC said it joined the remainder of the international medical fraternity in celebrating the scientific breakthrough.
“This is good news for Jamaica, given its ability to contribute to health, longevity and as a major foreign exchange earner. Williams’ discovery could change the face of medicine as we now know it,” the SRC declared.
Williams said that the next stage is conducting clinical trials of the compound and the development of a pharmaceutical agent.
The SRC, one of Jamaica’s chief proponents of scientific research and development, commended its team member on his “outstanding contribution to science”.
Rights to the patent are shared with Dr George Levy, a Jamaica-born medical doctor living in the United States.

But, the law in place protects jerks like Zimmerman stating:

The other shocking element of this law is that just five months after its implementation October 1, 2005, there were 13 self-defense shootings and only one of the individuals that were shot was armed. Six of the people in those shootings were killed.
The national rifle association was somehow able to get this law passed against lawmakers that were against it. Let’s get aware and get busy. There are surely other loophole laws like this one in other states that are keeping criminals like Zimmerman on the street. But, for the Martin case, specifically, use this info to get active on this young man’s case. We couldn’t defend Trayvon, but we can stand up for him and his family now. The Russian security services have previously claimed that Osmayev was ‘a graduate of a prestigious institution of higher learning in Great Britain’, and is from a prominent Chechen family opposed to Putin.
Shown on Russian state-run TV with his hands bandaged and wounds on his face, Osmayev has been on Russia’s wanted list for a number of years.
He is believed to have lived ‘for many years’ in London, which, if true, will inflame Russian concerns that Britain is a safe haven for alleged Islamic extremist terrorist suspects from Chechnya.
The arrests of two suspects was made by the Ukrainian special services anti-terrorist unit Alfa after an accidental explosion early last month in an Odessa apartment which killed a third alleged terrorist, Ruslan Madayev.
The revelation comes in the final week of campaigning for Sunday’s presidential election which Putin is virtually certain to win convincingly despite recent opposition street protests against his authoritarian rule.
Osmayev, believed to be 30, and fellow gang members were on a mission ordered by Chechnya’s most wanted rebel leader Doku Umarov, it was claimed.
In January last year, Umarov targeted passengers emerging from British flights at a Moscow airport. A total of 37 died and 180 were injured.
His goal is an Islamic state based on Chechnya and run under Sharia law in the tinderbox Caucasus region.
The alleged plotters, all ethnic Chechens, came to Ukraine from the United Arab Emirates via Turkey with ‘clear instructions from representatives of Doku Umarov’, it was claimed.
On Osmayev’s laptop was found hidden camera footage of Putin’s motorcade in Moscow, and it is believed this was to be the target of the assassination bid.

Pastor Reginald Osborne
Why he is a local hero: Osborne is working to bring people of different faiths together to solve many of today’s problems.
The way Pastor Osborne sees it, people of different faiths waste too much time arguing about things that aren’t important while issues, such as drug addiction and youth gang violence, go unaddressed.
“There are so many faiths divided in the community. Everyone thinks they are going to heaven and that the other person is wrong. It breaks my heart because for years I have been in the street teaching the gospel of unity. I’m a Christian. I believe Jesus Christ is the son of God, but everyone doesn’t think like me. The question is what can we do to help the children,” says Osborne.
Osborne has tackled this issue by entering into a variety of interfaith efforts, including the Newark Interfaith Coalition for Hope and Peace. The group supports other grassroots organizations seeking to stem the tide of violence in and around Newark. The most dramatic of Osborne’s efforts, though, may be that Muslims, Christians, and Jehovah Witnesses alike attend Bethel Family and Youth Resource Center, his Newark, N.J., church.
It started a few years ago when Osborne ran an intensive life skills program that helped people dealing with addiction issues. Afterward, many of his attendees, who are of various faiths, began showing up at his church, because they felt a sense of togetherness at Osborne’s church.
During the services, Christians say, “Hallelujah,” and the Muslims say, “Alluh Akbar.” Muslims teach Christians Arabic, and there is an overall greater understanding and respect of one another’s faith. And that’s what is needed to challenge many of the social problems plaguing America today, says Osborne.
“Let us pastors and imams go out into the street at 2 a.m., where people are shooting one another. Let’s create employment. Let’s work together. I long for pastors and imams to unite and say, ‘We don’t have same theology, but let’s do what we have to do,’” says Osborne.
The move hasn’t come without criticism. Some think what Osborne’s doing is heretical, but Osborne sees proof of the opposite in the lives of the changed men and women of different faiths who step in to his church every week. It appears that many critics are actually fearful of what can be accomplished when people of different faiths come together around common goals.
“The only way to do this is to try and bring people together, where a Jewish can go to a masjid, a Muslim can go to a church, and a Christian can go to a synagogue,” said Osborne.

His death was announced by his son-in-law, James Coughlin, who said Dundee had recently been treated for blood clots.
In more than 60 years in professional boxing, Dundee gained acclaim as a brilliant cornerman, whether healing cuts, inspiring his fighters to battle on when they seemed to be reeling, or adjusting strategy between rounds to counter an opponent’s style.
“In that one minute, Angelo is Godzilla and Superman rolled into one,” Dr. Ferdie Pacheco, who often worked with Dundee and then became a TV boxing analyst, once remarked.
Ali told The New York Times in 1981: “You come back to the corner and he’ll say, ‘The guy’s open for a hook,’ or this or that. ” If he tells you something during a fight, you can believe it. As a cornerman, Angelo is the best in the world.”
When Thomas Hearns was rallying against Leonard in their welterweight championship unification fight in September 1981, Dundee got Leonard going again after the 12th round bell, telling him, “You’re blowing it, son, you’re blowing it.” Leonard knocked Hearns down in the 13th round and won the bout when the referee stopped it in the 14th.
Dundee “knew precisely how to get through to me at the most pivotal moments, and no moment in the fight, or in my career, was as pivotal as this,” Leonard recalled in his memoir “The Big Fight” (2011),” written with Michael Arkush.
Dundee’s first champion was Carmen Basilio, the welterweight and middleweight titleholder of the 1950s from upstate New York. Although best remembered for Ali and Leonard, Dundee also trained the light-heavyweight champion Willie Pastrano, the heavyweight titleholder Jimmy Ellis and the welterweight champion Luis Rodriguez. Dundee advised George Foreman when he regained the heavyweight title at age 45. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1992.
He was born Angelo Mirena in Philadelphia, the son of a railroad worker. He became Angelo Dundee after his brother, Joe, fought professionally under the name Johnny Dundee, in tribute to a former featherweight champion; another brother, Chris, also adopted the Dundee name.
After working as a cornerman at military boxing tournaments in England while in the Army Air Forces during World War II, Dundee served an apprenticeship at Stillman’s Gym near the old Madison Square Garden, learning his craft from veteran trainers like Ray Arcel, Charley Goldman and Chickie Ferrara. In the early 1950s he teamed with his brother Chris to open the Fifth Street gym in Miami Beach. It became their longtime base, Angelo as a trainer and Chris as a promoter.
In the late 1950s, Dundee gave some tips to a promising amateur named Cassius Clay, and in December 1960, after Clay’s first pro bout, Dundee became his trainer, working with him in Miami Beach. He guided him to the heavyweight title with a knockout of Sonny Liston in February 1964.
Dundee avoided the temptation to tamper with the brilliance of his young and charismatic fighter, and he used a bit of psychology in honing his talents.
“I never touched that natural stuff with him,” Dundee recalled in his memoir, “My View From the Corner” (2008), written with Bert Randolph Sugar. He added: “So every now and then I’d subtly suggest some move or other to him, couching it as if it were something he was already doing. I’d say something like: ‘You’re getting that jab down real good. You’re bending your knees now and you’re putting a lot of snap into it.’ Now, he had never thrown a jab, but it was a way of letting him think it was his idea, his innovation.”
When Cassius Clay became Muhammad Ali soon after winning the heavyweight title, his boxing management and financial affairs were handled by the Nation of Islam. Dundee was the only white man in his camp, and he grew disturbed over references to that fact.
In his memoir, Dundee said that he and Ali “had this special thing, a unique blend, a chemistry.”
“I never heard anything resembling a racist comment leave his mouth,” he said. “There was never a black-white divide.”
Dundee knew all the tricks in the boxing trade, and then some.
