News Corp to pay $3.2-million to family of murdered girl at heart of phone hacking scandal

“We cannot just be a profitable company, we must be a principled company,” Murdoch said in his opening remarks to the annual meeting of shareholders of News Corp.
“We must admit to and confront our mistakes and establish a rigorous and vigorous procedure to put things right,” Murdoch told the meeting held in a movie theater at News Corp.-owned Fox Studios in Los Angeles.

“There is simply no excuse for such unethical behavior,” he said of the hacking of cellphones by journalists from the now-shuttered British tabloid weekly The News of the World.

“These are real issues that we must confront and are confronting,” Murdoch said. “If we hold others to account we must hold ourselves to account.”

“I am personally determined to right whatever wrong has been committed and to make sure that it doesn’t happen again anywhere in our company,” he said.

Shortly before Murdoch’s appearance, News Corp.’s British newspaper arm News International confirmed it would pay £2-million to the family of a murdered girl at the heart of the phone-hacking scandal.

In a joint statement with the family of Milly Dowler, Murdoch said he would personally donate £1 million ($1.6-million) to charities chosen by the famil.

“The behavior that the News of the World exhibited towards the Dowlers was abhorrent and I hope this donation underscores my regret for the company’s role in this awful event,” Murdoch said.

“I also hope that through the personal donation something positive can be done in memory of their daughter.”

The 168-year-old News of the World was shut down after a public outcry when it emerged a private investigator working for the paper hacked into Milly Dowler’s voicemail after she went missing in 2002.

“The Duke of York” – Prince Andrew

Ambassador party over for Andrew: Humiliated Prince to step down as Britain’s trade envoy following row over friendship with U.S. sex offender

The Duke of York is to step down from his role as the UK’s roving business ambassador, he confirmed tonight.

He will give up the post following the intense scrutiny he faced earlier this year over his relationships with a series of controversial figures, including a convicted paedophile.

The Duke has been dogged by accusations of a lack of judgment about his links with American billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, who was sentenced to 18 months in prison in 2008 for soliciting a minor for prostitution.

He said on his website the job has served its purpose.

The Duke also stated he would continue to develop his role in support of UK businesses.

He said: ‘As the evolution of my role continues apace and in order to reflect the changes I have outlined, I have decided that the label I gave myself when I began this role of Special Representative has served its purpose and is no longer necessary to the work that I do today and, more importantly, in the future.

‘I am tremendously grateful for the continued support of Her Majesty’s Government and the business community in particular, which has been instrumental in delivering prosperity and enabling me to undertake this role.’

He also outlined his plans to focus more on the training of the next generation of workers and helping small and medium-sized businesses widen their role in the export market.

Detroit Is On Fire!

What more can the city of Detroit take? The city has suffered economic blow after economic blow and now the city is burning down. If you haven’t been to the place lately, there are areas where whole blocks are vacant and homes burnt out as if a war had taken place there. Neighborhoods are shells of their former selves. Now yesterday it appears that the city was trying to rival the Great Chicago Fire while also being ranked as the Most Stressed City in America.
The stress is obvious with the unemployment rate over 14 percent and a lot of the neighborhoods’ visible declaration of hopelessness via vacancy. Some homes have been vacant for a year or more, yet you would not be the wiser for the manicured lawns…if you’re lucky. Some neighborhoods are so overgrown there is no evidence that homes were there at all. That might be a very good reason why the fire that occurred yesterday swept through several neighborhoods and dozens of homes so swiftly. Let’s pray that Detroit’s Mayor David Bing will have a solution with his idea “The Detroit Strategic Framework Plan,” which is supposed to reshape the use of the land in Detroit to improve the economy. The first meeting will be September 14.

Check out the devastating fires. God bless you Detroit!
