The 11th season of Dancing With The Stars kicks off on the 20th. This year’s dancers include David Hasselhoff (Baywatch, Knight Rider) Kirstie Alley (Cheers), Michael Bolton, Football Star Kurt Warner, Sarah Palin’s daughter Bristol, Singer Brandy, Kyle Massey (Corey In The House, That’s So Raven) former husband of Vanessa Williams and Basketball Star Rick Fox and Brady Bunch mom Florence Henderson. Brandy is the favorite to win it all. If Brandy wins, she would be the first African American female to win. Past contestants include Laila Ali, Vivica A. Fox, Mel B, Mya and Lil’ Kim.

Whoopi Goldberg

In more Whoopi news, Goldberg has been catching a lot of flak for talking about her friendship with Mel Gibson saying she believes he’s not a racist. The Oscar winning actor has been in the headlines with his nasty breakup with his Russian girlfriend/ babymomma Oksana Grigorieva. She recorded conversations of him spewing hatred towards everyone. The violent outbursts were shocking and disheartening. Has one of America’s favorite movie stars gone mad? Where is Danny Glover, his Lethal Weapon co-star? What does he think of this? Gibson has certainly ruined his career with his hate filled rants and reports of beating his babymomma.

In addition to Marvin Gaye, Fuqua was known for his work with Tammi Terrell, The Spinners, Johnny Bristol, New Birth, Etta James, Sylvester and The Weather Girls, to name a few. He’s best known for his work on the movie Training Day featuring Denzel Washington’s Oscar winning performance.

Ego Check for Gabourey Sidibe

It’s always a let-down when folks you’ve admired or respected from afar turn out to be jerks in person. Case in point: Gabourey Sidibe, the Oscar-nominated actress in the title role of “Precious.”

Y’all know how much I loved the powerful film from director Lee Daniels about an obese New York City teenager enduring unspeakable abuse at the hands of her parents. After Oscar night, I wrote, “I was rooting for Gabourey Sidibe for best actress. But the moment edgy comedienne Mo’Nique won the Oscar for supporting actress, I knew that the divine Sidibe was toast.” But after meeting Sidibe at the White House Correspondents dinner and hearing about others’ negative encounters with her, I’m putting down my pompoms.

I was thrilled to spot her at a table laughing uproariously with the man sitting to her right. “I know you’re having a good time and I’m sorry to interrupt,” I began. My next sentence didn’t come out because Sidibe shouted over the din, “Yeah, come back in five minutes!” Thinking she was joking, I laughed and pretended to walk away. When I noticed that the look in her eyes meant she was serious, I walked back to her and said, “I just wanted to congratulate you on your nomination. I thought your performance was spectacular. I even wrote a column about it.” After wishing her good luck, I rejoined my friends.

Back at the table, I sheepishly related the incident to my colleague Jo-Ann Armao. “Oh! She’s horrible,” Armao said in her wonderfully blunt way. She told me that she saw Sidibe at the pre-cocktails and told her that she’d seen “Precious” three times (an amazing emotional feat that only adds to my awe of Armao) and that she thought Sidibe’s performance was “incandescent.” What was Sidibe’s response? “I guess I should say, ‘Thank you.’”

At the MSNBC after party, the partner of a “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” producer said to me, “Look! There’s Gabby Sidibe. I’m going to ask her to take a picture with me.” I warned him, “She’s mean.” To which he said, “I don’t care. I just want a picture.” I didn’t see what went down, but the dejected fan came back and said incredulously, “She said no.” No doubt the constant interruptions and jostling are bothersome. Her ever-shrinking zone of privacy must be irksome, too. And there’s no law that says Sidibe has to show grace to her fans or appreciation for their kind words. But a true star would.

At a dinner for the BET Honors back in January here in Washington, I had the pleasure of sitting next to Oscar-nominated actress and singer Queen Latifah. To be honest, I expected to get the Sidibe treatment. Instead, Latifah was as interesting as she was interested. She greeted fans who came over with a smile and warmth that made people happy they worked up the courage just to say hello. Latifah knows that without fans she has no career. Sidibe’s behavior shows she has yet to learn that. How about checking that ego at
the door.

Weight Watchers

Weight Watchers, 7-Eleven Tap Jennifer Hudson. Oscar and Grammy award-winner Jennifer Hudson was announced this morning as the latest celebrity to represent Weight Watchers. The Oscar winner will begin appearing in ads for the weight loss company beginning Sunday, according to the Associated Press. Hudson recently lost weight after the birth of her first child, a son with fiancé David Otunga. She says of her new weight loss gig, “It’s a lifestyle change, not a diet.” Meanwhile, J-Hud has also designed a coffee cup for 7-Eleven as part of their “7-Eleven Coffee Cup with a Cause” charity campaign. Her cup goes on sale today at participating 7-Eleven stores across the U.S. and will be available through May 31 or while supplies last. Proceeds from the cup featuring Hudson’s personal design will benefit her designated charity, Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Hudson made a surprise appearance at a Chicago-area Boys & Girls Clubs of America location March 31 to formally announce her partnership with 7-Eleven and officially launch the cup’s sales. Featuring a brightly burning candle as the focal point, the cup is inscribed with the words “Light of Peace” in Hudson’s handwriting. “7-Eleven’s ‘Coffee Cup With A Cause’ program not only lets me give back to an organization that really helped me while I was growing up in Chicago,” Hudson said, “but also is an opportunity to tell others about the great work this organization continues to do. The Boys & Girls Clubs provide safe places for kids to learn and grow, not just in Chicago but across our country and on U.S. military bases around the world.” Throughout 2010, 7-Eleven will introduce limited-edition 20-ounce coffee cups designed by entertainment and sports celebrities to be sold in its U.S. stores. Proceeds from sales of the cups benefit the featured celebrity’s charity of choice. These cups can be filled with any 7-Eleven hot beverage and customized with a selection of creams, syrups and spices at no extra charge.
