Secret Service sex scandal to cost at least three agents their jobs

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Secret Service said Wednesday that three employees will leave their jobs over the sex scandal in a hotel in Colombia which tarnished the elite presidential protection agency’s image.

Two leading congressmen meanwhile revealed in a letter to Secret Service chief Mark Sullivan obtained by ABC News that agents accused of consorting with prostitutes may have been careless with “sensitive security information.”

Representatives Darrell Issa and Elijah Cummings also warned that the party hijinks in the Caribbean resort of Cartagena before President Barack Obama’s arrival last weekend brought the entire culture of the agency into question.

US Secret Service scandal grows

A prostitution scandal surrounding a US Secret Service detail in Colombia widened on Sunday as an additional five US Army personnel were confined to their quarters.

A prostitution scandal surrounding a US Secret Service detail in Colombia widened yesterday (Sunday) as an additional five US Army personnel were confined to their quarters.

The five service members violated their curfew and may have been involved in inappropriate conduct, according to a statement released by the US military’s southern command.

Eleven secret service agents were being interviewed in Washington over the weekend after being sent home in disgrace from the historic city of Cartagena, where Barack Obama is trying to deepen US trade and security ties to Latin America at a major summit.

The embarrassment for America deepened further as those briefed on the investigation said that all 11 of the agents had taken women back to their rooms, as opposed to a single officer suggested in earlier reports.

The incident at the Hotel Caribe after a drunken night out that breached curfew rules occurred before President Obama landed in Colombia on Friday and did not involve any members of his personal protection squad. The incident has heaped diplomatic embarrassment on the US, threatening to overshadow Obama’s already troubled agenda at the Summit of the Americas which has been undermined by a boycott from Leftist leaders, including the anti-US president of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez.

“I had a breakfast meeting to discuss trade and drugs, but the only thing the other delegates wanted to talk about was the story of the agents and the hookers,” said one Latin American diplomat.

Jay Carney, the White House spokesman, said that the president had been informed of the incident, but refused to divulge his reaction, except to say that Obama had “full confidence” in the Secret Service’s ability to protect him.

Secret Service – Obama

Armed Man Held After Obama Leaves N.C. Airport. An armed man with a car decked out with police gear was held after being spotted at a North Carolina airport just after President Obama took off. Joseph Sean McVey, 23, had police sirens, flashing lights, four big antennas, and a digital camera mounted on the dashboard in his car, as well as a sidearm. The Ohio man, who is not law enforcement, was charged with going armed in terror of the public, a misdemeanor. Obama had been vacationing in Asheville, N.C., and had just left for the memorial service for the 29 miners killed in West Virginia this month. Airport police saw McVey get out of his car and listen to a handheld scanner and radio with a remote earpiece, which he was using to monitor local agencies. He had formulas for rifle scopes on a note in his car. McVey was questioned by police and Secret Service and said he heard the president was in town and that he wanted to see him.
